Drew555 11-15-2014 06:41 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 90% of us are running GM motors. Blocks, etc. why would you go with ford. Most of my work trucks were fords because I bought them used and there resale value was low. Why is it low? Huh. That's because ford sucks. Before anyone gets there arss up. Remember I did buy them lol. But that's because I was broke and building a business . Now it GM or nothing

Ironically it is my two GM blocks that are in 25,000 pieces in the garage while my f350 is calmly cranking out 650hp and 1200 ftlbs and always gets the nod over my wife's tahoe if we are traveling!!!!

I disagree, first of all they all have issues... that being said I have always had extremely high mile Fords...including my 320,000 mile 2006 6.0, the truck is in great shape, all around, the interior alone withstands mileage by far better then GM and Dodge... I still cant get past GM using 1/2 ton tie rods on a HEAVY DUTY truck... that may have changed over last couple years I dont know....

I have had 4 super dutys all in 300-400,00 mile range that have been GREAT TRUCKS I dont see anyone bragging about high miles Gm out there win great shape... if at all.

Sounds like you have diesels . I truck is nothing like a boat . A boat is like driving up hill with a huge load on it. All day , every day. I didn't say that fords were junk. It's just that the same **** on them brake like clock work. And the bottom ends of the gas motors suck. If ford and Chevy merged it would make a great motor. Chevy bottom end and ford top ends. I have 150k on my 2500hd duramax and only changed brakes and one wheel bearing. It's a 2001 truck also

I thought the thread was about a truck??? lol

I disagree Ford bottom ends are junk, all I have ever owned is Ford, many of them... no complaints...

That's why I said to put a Chevy bottom end with ford top end

Drew555 11-16-2014 05:28 PM

It really didn't matter what we like or don't like. Because if it's broken we will fix it otherwise we are not getting the boat to the water lol

damdonzi 11-16-2014 07:01 PM

That does not look as good as some of the other conversions out there in my opinion.
It seems like the 2 big companies are doing this are:

Custom Autos By Tim (Which I am fairly certain they cut the frame to accomplish the conversion) http://www.customautosbytim.com/
The guys at Super Trucks http://f650pickups.com/550xuv.html

Unlimited jd 11-16-2014 07:46 PM

Yeah I love those ford top ends with the self ejecting spark plugs... I will say I love both of my 7.3 fords, but there gas engines are garbage. The ls series gm's have it all over them.

I like how the early Ford's eject spark plugs for fun, and the later Ford's seize the spark plugs solid and come out piece by piece. Nothing like going from one extreme to the other. Not to mention timing chain tensioner issues, cam phaser issues, thrust bearing issues, those Ford mod motors just sucked all over.

SB 11-16-2014 08:09 PM

Yup, put GM Powertrain on a Ford Chassis and we'd be all set.

Downfall with the Chevies is how fast they rust - lines/frame/crossmembers/rockers. Ford way better here..

F*k it - Chevy just needs to copy Ford's metal and/or rust proofing.

I'm talking gas (not diesel) here too.

Full Force 11-16-2014 08:32 PM

Thats why I have Diesel, I seem to not have all the issues others have, I'm good with that, my 6.0 is studded and deleted, it runs great! just gotta know what to do

gmgearhead454 11-16-2014 11:10 PM

Lil red & donzi matt hit the nail on the head! I LOVE my chevys, just wish I didn't have to keep my kid up to date on their tetnis shots just to defend against all the damn rust on the rockers and cab corners! But I guess it still beats the "self ejecting spark plugs" <----- hilarious btw, and sewing machine sounding valvetrain of a junk ass powerless 3-valve Ford. But yeah I guess they do have it together with Diesels. Well maybe 10 years ago they did. Then came the 6.0 in all its head gasket blowing, injector failing, FICM fouling, ball joint breaking no-resale glory!!! Ill stop before I get ahead of myself ;) lol

MILD THUNDER 11-16-2014 11:16 PM

My 6.0 Ford superduty was a pile of garbage. Headgaskets, egr coolers , some other running issues, ball joints toast at 50k miles, front hubs shot at 50k miles, a/c system took a crap at 40k miles. By 75k miles that thing must have been in the dealer at least a dozen times since new.

I bought it new, so I had to work all the bugs out for the second owner. Worst 50g I ever spent. Couldn't wait to unload that junk.

Full Force 11-17-2014 12:06 AM

That's why I buy high milers all the bs is over! Lol

tommymonza 11-17-2014 02:09 AM

What years and what models of the Ford gas engines were bad. Asking because I was looking at a few small RVs with Ford chassis lately. What about Fords trannys too

I prefer GM but it seems all the models I like are on a Ford Chassis.

For their standard conversion to Excursion from F250 or F350 They don't need to cut the frame. If you go bigger(stretched) then your most likely correct.

Tim's trucks look great but a new F350-Excursion package starts at 44K (plus the truck) so to build a new Excursion you will have 95K into it!.......beautiful work but pretty sure you could buy the nicest Excursion out there for less than 44k and leave the F350 stock then have 2 vehicles for the same 95K!

The spark plugs and cam phasers issues were resolved in 2008 and was also the last year of the 6.0. Transmission - the select shift is a great transmission but shifts could be perceived as unrefined especially when the line pressure is increased from cold weather.

140k no issues with my F-150.

Change oil every 8k with Mobil 1
Trans fluid done at 80K
rear diff 110k
sparks 100k
Front Brakes (massive for a 1/2 ton) last about 50k
Rear Brakes 100k

nothing else....yet

That was my exact experience with my 04 6.0, also had a wiring harness short out on a valve cover stud and the windshield leaked around the seal. Sold it to a friend of mine that just had to have it with 89K miles and he put over 100K miles on it. The only issue he had in that 100K miles was the FICM going bad, other than that it was trouble free for him. Go figure.

5.4L V8 and the V10s all have their issues. I'd steer clear. I've been searching (almost continuously for the past 6 months) for 8.1L GM powered trucks, and there are occasionally RVs with them on eBay:

A couple in this bunch have the 8.1L GM motor:

Thanks prefer a Gm especially after seeing the performance report against the Ford. Looking for the smallest class C I can find , just seems 90 percent of them are Fords

Interesting head to head Chevy against Ford in a loaded Cube van here on this page on the right and down about 3 inches

Years ago I had a ford 6.9 diesel boxvan for racing, Absolutly positively just would not die.I drove the hell out of that thimg. off roaded it, launched it.. it just would not be killed.

SVT Bronco #1, 5.0-liter eight-cylinder gasoline engine that will be able to generate 420 horsepower. Torque number is not known. #2, 4.9-liter six-cylinder Powerstroke diesel powertrain that could produce 330 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. Last but not least my favorite. A supercharged 5.8-liter 8-cylinder with 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque. Me thinx all would pull a "jet ski" and probably a jet Airbus A380
