Ford 6.0 turbo

Any diesel mechanics on board ? Can I up the turbo size on my 2005 F-250 without getting into the ecm ? Its going into limp home mode on long sustained up hill pulls and is a PITA when hauling 12K, I've read other posts about this and it seems that dirty or sticky veins could be the problem. The truck doesn't get driven much pretty much sits at the lake house, so I figured Id replace with a new larger one if possible. Or is there something else that's causing it, I don't have the code is throwing.

turbofox54 01-15-2016 09:55 AM

A Garrett powermax is a direct replacement and will run without a custom tune. I have one on my truck and it works great. Not sure why you are going into a limp mode going up hill...are you monitoring your egt's? Using your tow/haul mode? If the transmission is staying locked in overdrive then you won't turn the rpm up enough to keep egt's down. Get the codes checked before anything.
P.S. letting a diesel sit and do nothing is the worst thing in the world for it.

F-2 Speedy 01-15-2016 10:12 AM

thanks tf 54................ Im deff using tow haul mode, not on cruise control, when I hit a long grade the tranny will down shift, turbo starts building more boost and then out comes the code and I start slowing down, Ive got pretty good at shutting it off and restarting while still rolling about 50 mph and the code goes away, trucks back to normal and Im off and running again. I don't have a gauge for the exhaust temps. I have looked at powermax, is it larger than stock ??

Im well aware of the sitting around issues, but when its four hours away :sport009:......I drive it the whole time Im at the lake :D

turbofox54 01-15-2016 10:22 AM

Definetely pull codes. ..may be a problem with an exhaust back pressure sensor. The powermax is a little bigger than the factory turbo and is built by Garrett who is the oem manufacturer. It's not so big that it won't be compatible with the stock tune. I would recommend getting a tuner for it, I like the SCT Livewire unit as it let's you tune ,monitor engine sensors, and pull codes when they show up. The X4 unit is capable too just doesnt have the touchscreen. I have had good luck with getting parts from
www.rivercitydiesel.com I would actually get the tuner first before throwing parts at it. You could pull codes and even get a towing tune for the truck. The tunes make a world of difference as they tune the transmission too.

F-2 Speedy 01-15-2016 10:28 AM

Do you have a link to the tuner, the pcm will log the codes correct ? ever if I clear it by shutting it off and back on ?

so it maybe this..................http://www.ebay.com/itm/111641841035...84.m1436.l2649

Yes it should hold codes for a certain time. Those tuners will allow you to watch the engine sensors you select. There is an add on EGT sensor you can order also. I always watch EGT , coolant temp, oil temp, and boost at a minimum. I watch 5 sensors on my monitor and boost and fuel pressure on separate guages.

F-2 Speedy 01-15-2016 10:45 AM

Thanks for the help, the 399.00 one will do all I need ? I do like the camera feature on the other one

turbofox54 01-15-2016 10:48 AM

Yeah...from my understanding they both do all the same functions but the Livewire has the touchscreen and ability to display a camera input. If you order the X4 seriously consider adding the EGT probe kit. It's not hard to install...just drill and tap a small hole in the exhaust manifold to mount the sensor.

MINK 01-15-2016 01:13 PM

I own a diesel shop in Central,Oh - the Sctx4 is the way to go, even if you just use the "tow" tune - you can monitor engine data and pull codes as well.

I can save you a few bucks on one if you do go that route.

F-2 Speedy 01-15-2016 01:43 PM

Thanks MINK, pm me a price Im going to get one, whats the hp gain if any

Whats your guess on my issue, Im sure you seen it before, problem I have is where the truck is there's no one that can work on it.

hotrodford 01-15-2016 02:22 PM

Hi 33 Outlaw , if you get list dtc s diagnostic trouble codes , we can help / turbo vanes seizing from egr soot or actuator gets worn on hi mile apps / we run a 6.0 in overdrive grossing approx. 30 000 , so don't think tow haul rev hell out of motor is necessary , use tow haul for engine brake to stop slow down , auto zone used to do code reads for free or if u have a mechanic buddy /

tsatrooper1 01-15-2016 02:23 PM

You have one of two things going on. Its either the turbo is sticking at its over boosting, then the pcm is derating the truck. This can be fixed with by cleaning the rust and corrosion off the unison ring and vgt vanes in the turbo. The turbo has to come apart but its not a major deal. Or, your oil temp is getting to hot. This will also kick it into derate mode on heavy pulls. If this is the case the oil cooler is clogged and its going to take some work. I would have it checked for codes and possibly monitor the boost and oil and coolant temps while your loaded. I'm sure its one of the two. And you cant go wrong with a sct on a 6.0!

F-2 Speedy 01-15-2016 03:07 PM

Thanks guys, this truck just turned 70K so its probably the most babied truck around, the trans & oil temp gauges show normal readings when it happens.

Edit: the egr thingy was changed out at about 50K

Pwraddr 01-15-2016 06:59 PM

I have an 07 6 liter. 50k on it. Cleaned the turbo at 40 and now I have to do it again. The latest Ford calibration sweeps the vanes so it helps from getting stuck but it hinders fuel mileage also from other changes. The issue is the cast iron side of the turbo rusts and the vanes get stuck.

Take it off, clean it really well and reinstall.

I wouldn't recommend any performance mods, this motor likes to lift the heads.

Brandonb_05 01-15-2016 11:08 PM

When you say it is going into limp mode, is the red wrench light coming on/ flashing? if so it could be the oil cooler, if the oil temp gets out of a certain perimeter compared to the coolant temp it will derate the truck. A plugged oil cooler can cause this. I have replaced quite a few of them for this issue.

Brandonb_05 01-15-2016 11:12 PM

The best thing to do if you suspect it to be the oil cooler is monitor the engine coolant temp and engine oil temp with a scan tool. Try to duplicate the problem up hill and see what the temperature differential between the oil and coolant. I don't remember the exact number between the two, I will try to look it up tomorrow.

F-2 Speedy 01-16-2016 08:25 AM

the wrench on the dash is amber in color and is solid on, no flashing,

Brandonb_05 01-16-2016 08:34 AM

Gotca probably going to be the oil cooler hard to say without codes

indysupra 01-16-2016 08:35 AM

If the turbo is not stuck and its throwing an over boost code it's usually a plugged ebp sensor and or pipe.

Brandonb_05 01-16-2016 08:37 AM

Take your truck to advance and have them use their generic obd2 scanner to scan for codes. It's free

ezstriper 01-16-2016 03:54 PM

have a friend with a 05 6.0, drives it very little, on the 4th turbo before 30k...ford claims he does not drive enough !! what a crock

F-2 Speedy 01-16-2016 04:24 PM

ez- That's why I'm going to put a new one on it

If the amber wrench light is on, probably not the turbo.

As others mentioned. Get the code. Get a device to read the coolant temp and the oil temp after operating temperature 60mph on a flat road. Should be less than 15 degrees. If more the oil cooler is plugged.

Is the original coolant in the truck? If so, flush it a few times prior to changing oil cooler and then put Caterpillar EC1 coolant in it with a coolant filter.

F-2 Speedy 01-16-2016 08:17 PM

yes, coolant has not been changed, original

Brandonb_05 01-16-2016 09:37 PM

Sorry not to mention my credentials but I do hold many ford certifications including 7.3 6.0 6.4

mike tkach 01-16-2016 11:25 PM

who makes a good tuner for my 2011 ford 6.7 and will i gain any mpg with one.

ezstriper 01-17-2016 07:38 AM

all I can say is not driving the truck everyday leads to killing turbos they have a issue...I do not drive my duramax much at all, sits in garage until we need to tow usually, no turbo issues, sounds like some high paid engineer screwed up...

Brandonb_05 01-17-2016 09:24 AM

I agree with you, I also own a duramax.

Brandonb_05 01-17-2016 09:28 AM

I don't know of the best programmer for the 6.7 but I know the sct was a really good programmer for the 6.0. You might want to see what they offer for the 6.7

F-2 Speedy 01-17-2016 10:02 AM

Its been stated a few time for me to get a scanner ( and I am ) to monitor the oil & coolant temps, does this mean my gauges aren't reading properly ?? This is a Lariat package and has gauges for engine & trans temps and of course oil pressure

Which one should I get, listed on the first page of this thread

turbofox54 01-17-2016 12:17 PM

Get the X4...it will do everything you need. The guages on the dash are not accurate like the ones the computer reads, also I don't think you have an oil temp guage in the factory dash. I can watch my coolant temp move 20 degrees on my monitor and the factory coolant temp guage doesn't move. I like to know exactly where my Temps are running at. Having an actual number to watch helps tell what is going on, for example...you want your oil temp to be no more the 10 degrees hotter than coolant temp when cruising. If the difference is greater it is a sign that your oil cooler is clogged and should be replaced.
My truck is an 04 I bought new and is my daily driver, I did all my own work on it and spent a long time learning what to do to make the truck reliable and fun. There are other ways to go about it with other parts but these have all worked for me and haven't seen anything else on the market yet that makes me regret spending the money I have on these parts.

F-2 Speedy 01-17-2016 12:49 PM

I have two temp gauges, trans & coolant

Pwraddr 01-17-2016 03:02 PM

They aren't digital read out and there isn't a oil temp gauge. See my previous post.

F-2 Speedy 01-17-2016 04:04 PM

I know their analog, I read your post, thanks for the input, where's the best place to get the tuner or are they all the same price.

tsatrooper1 01-20-2016 11:12 AM

The oil temps on these are monitored by the pcm and not a gauge. You will not know the oil temps are getting hot unless it derates the truck. Usually will set a ect/ eot correlation code. Sometimes not. I believe its in the 230-240 deg range it starts derating. Letting these trucks set is not good like the others have stated.
The coolant breaks down and the turbo unison ring rusts to the housing. Pse, spartan, innovative are all good tunes for the 6.7. Sct for the 6.0.

F-2 Speedy 01-20-2016 11:21 AM

My SCT-X4 should be here Friday, picked up for 295 bucks, when all the other ones where 399, thanks for all the input, I will head to the lake when I get it and hopefully pull the code and report back

F-2 Speedy 05-10-2016 09:02 AM

Update, I bought the SCT-X4 as suggested, hooked the tuner up and put the 60 hp tow tune in it, man did it wake it up :D pulled the boat back from OK about a 5 hr trip and I had no issues, 65-70 all the way home, no limp mode, no codes to date, I've keep it at home and driven it daily for about a month, taking it and the boat back to the lake in a couple weeks, thanks to everyone for all the input,

Mike T, this tuner will also perform on your 6.7
