Default Ford 6.0 turbo

Any diesel mechanics on board ? Can I up the turbo size on my 2005 F-250 without getting into the ecm ? Its going into limp home mode on long sustained up hill pulls and is a PITA when hauling 12K, I've read other posts about this and it seems that dirty or sticky veins could be the problem. The truck doesn't get driven much pretty much sits at the lake house, so I figured Id replace with a new larger one if possible. Or is there something else that's causing it, I don't have the code is throwing.

A Garrett powermax is a direct replacement and will run without a custom tune. I have one on my truck and it works great. Not sure why you are going into a limp mode going up hill...are you monitoring your egt's? Using your tow/haul mode? If the transmission is staying locked in overdrive then you won't turn the rpm up enough to keep egt's down. Get the codes checked before anything.
P.S. letting a diesel sit and do nothing is the worst thing in the world for it.

thanks tf 54................ Im deff using tow haul mode, not on cruise control, when I hit a long grade the tranny will down shift, turbo starts building more boost and then out comes the code and I start slowing down, Ive got pretty good at shutting it off and restarting while still rolling about 50 mph and the code goes away, trucks back to normal and Im off and running again. I don't have a gauge for the exhaust temps. I have looked at powermax, is it larger than stock ??

Im well aware of the sitting around issues, but when its four hours away ......I drive it the whole time Im at the lake

Definetely pull codes. ..may be a problem with an exhaust back pressure sensor. The powermax is a little bigger than the factory turbo and is built by Garrett who is the oem manufacturer. It's not so big that it won't be compatible with the stock tune. I would recommend getting a tuner for it, I like the SCT Livewire unit as it let's you tune ,monitor engine sensors, and pull codes when they show up. The X4 unit is capable too just doesnt have the touchscreen. I have had good luck with getting parts from
www.rivercitydiesel.com I would actually get the tuner first before throwing parts at it. You could pull codes and even get a towing tune for the truck. The tunes make a world of difference as they tune the transmission too.

Yes it should hold codes for a certain time. Those tuners will allow you to watch the engine sensors you select. There is an add on EGT sensor you can order also. I always watch EGT , coolant temp, oil temp, and boost at a minimum. I watch 5 sensors on my monitor and boost and fuel pressure on separate guages.

Yeah...from my understanding they both do all the same functions but the Livewire has the touchscreen and ability to display a camera input. If you order the X4 seriously consider adding the EGT probe kit. It's not hard to install...just drill and tap a small hole in the exhaust manifold to mount the sensor.

I own a diesel shop in Central,Oh - the Sctx4 is the way to go, even if you just use the "tow" tune - you can monitor engine data and pull codes as well.

I can save you a few bucks on one if you do go that route.
