Trailer: Bow Stop Or Bow Roller?

Bow rollers seem notorious for scuffing the bows of boats. Should I replace mine with a bow stop like this one from Overton's?

I'm swapping my roller out for the stop that Myco uses. It says it is non-marking...

Mseuro 04-15-2016 08:54 AM

I no longer have a roller because of the scaring and scratches. I installed a bow catcher and love it.

BajaDan 04-15-2016 09:06 AM

Bow rollers mar the finish of boats because they usually do not roll. Something I posted on another site but a quick and easy fix.

Dan

I haven't checked to see if my roller rolls. I will check that tomorrow. Your link got blocked btw.

BajaDan 04-15-2016 09:11 AM

Well, funny that the url changes when I post the message.

Lets try it this way.

It appears that OSO does not think to highly of other boating forums. That's disappointing.

BajaDan 04-15-2016 09:14 AM

Try replacing the *** with the word ***************. Now if this doesn't go through I will start believing in an OSO conspiracy theory. And I just sent them money too.

BajaDan 04-15-2016 09:16 AM

power boat nation all one word.

Thank you. Yes, that's sad they would block other forums!

A search turned up your thread. Interesting. Tomorrow will be my first time out this year and I will see if the roller turns and go from there.

I have the one in the bottom picture. Holds up well and no marks anymore

No conspiracy, they just don't like competition. They will audit/remove negative posts/threads about site sponsors also. They are a business and in it for the money. Still lots of great info and members but they will censor what they wish.

As far as the Bow stop vs roller I would definitely go to a bow stop. It makes loading the boat easier plus the benefits of not scuffing.

Sydwayz 04-15-2016 02:23 PM

Dump the roller altogether. The best you can can do is switch to the split Bow Stops.

I read all those threads and the Myco solution looks like more than what I want to get into right now. Also when I winch the boat up it does put some load on the front roller which helps support the boat. Looking at it I'm pretty sure the roller isn't turning so the roller mod might be my best bet now. I will know more tomorrow.

thirdchildhood 04-16-2016 07:12 PM

The roller is not turning! I'm going to try BajaDan's roller mod.

Usually what happens is the bolt bends and then won't spin. Happened on my PQ trailer. When it turns all will be good.

I changed mine from the roller type, it always marked the bow, I bought the rubber blocks from myco they were about $40 each and made my own bow stop.

thirdchildhood 04-16-2016 09:36 PM

The rubber blocks are nice but I think the roller will be fine for my boat when it turns with the weight going up and forward. The fix is really simple too.

Sorry here's the finished product, can only post 10 pics at a time, I made it adjustable and kept it on the gelcoat and not on the painted sides.

That's a lot more boat than mine! Looks nice, I like the yellow & white ;). My concern is that as I winch my boat up the last few inches it comes upward and forward to support the weight of the bow a bit. With that set-up it would be trying to slide against the rubber blocks. Did I mention I like the yellow and white? (in the one pic it looks like the outboards are on it!)

I really like your donzi, that color combo is assume:D she should haul the mail with that 525 in her. yea mine looks like a row boat aside that center console, and it does look like its got egg beaters on it haha..

Sydwayz 04-18-2016 03:07 AM

All you do is spray the rubber blocks down with Spray Wax (any type) before you retrieve. As soon as your are done any marks that are left are wax, and just come right off. You can do this with your bow roller too. You really don't want your bow roller supporting any weight. All you want is just enough pressure to keep the boat from bouncing.

It doesn't support much weight. I did the BajaDan mod and it worked great. The roller spins as if it were on bearings.

Just be aware, that boats have been known to hit the split between the roller and the outer caps, and go right up the metal bracket. I've seen it happen. Nice work on the mods though. If I was forced to have only a roller, I'd probably do that too.

I am NOT a fan of wood blocks with carpet on them for the Bow Stop. I had them on my last trailer originally, and they were terrible. This needs to be a "soft catch" with some spring & give to it, hence why I like the cushioned rubber/silicone 'dock bumpers' that Myco and others use.

I agree the rubber would be better but this is what's on my setup originally and I have no problems with them the way I load.

V block for me. My trailer started life with a high mounted roller which I hated because it contacted the painted area of the boat. I called the trailer manufacturer and had him build me a V block which I installed and then added custom padded covers to the blocks.

ICDEDPPL 04-22-2016 05:23 PM

I made this nerdy thing.
Loading unloading is so much easier with the bow stop out of the way and no marks

Those are are cool solutions and all are better than the roller but they are not easy projects and I think my 22' boat will be fine with the roller now that it actually rolls! :)

Looking good John, Lori did a nice job on those covers!
