To trade or not to trade.....that is the question.

So with the Sonic sold and the new biz funded....there is no big boat in my future for a bit.

I still have and daily my 2001 Excursion 4x4 with a 7.3L. Sadly this year has been the year **** wanted to break. I have pumped about $4k so far this year and the breaks are getting done this month with new rotors and all.

So I have been thinking of letting her go as I don't need that much truck anymore.

I got offered an 02 2500 Suburban. 6.0L 2wd loaded with all features. They also offered to cut me a check for $3k.

So my truck for theirs, tags and taxes paid, and a check for $3k......ya or na.

I would take the cargo carrier and sell it too

Sydwayz 05-20-2016 08:25 AM

If you really like the Excursion, keep it. They are drying up, and if you have one that you trust and have maintained, it's worth holding onto.

I would not give up a PSD Excursion for a 6.0L GM anything.

I love it.

I trust it mechanical wise. Only issue is when we get those FL heavy rains....I develop a small leak from the window seal and it drips to the main harness soaking it. Once soaked it won't start till it drys up.

I have resealed the window and fixed up a USB tiny fan under the dash and so far so good but still a worry.

The door panels come off really easy. It shouldn't be hard to put new window seals on it.

Also, an old trick to make the Ford door seals a little better is to remove the entire door seal (comes off in 5 seconds) and fish clear silicone tubing through it. You will be surprised how much wind noise it cuts down.

Keep the excursion. You are basically making an even trade size wise, but giving up 4x4, MPG, and a "known" vehicle.

Jupiter Sunsation 05-20-2016 08:41 AM

I love GM stuff but there is a reason the buyer is looking to trade you! Either sell the EX outright or keep it, don't bother with the Suburban

RollWithIt 05-20-2016 09:06 AM

I would also keep the Excursion over the Suburban. As long as your truck is has a solid frame and body, everything else can be updated like new.

VoodooRob 05-20-2016 09:45 AM

I made the switch from a 2500 Suburban 8.1 to Excursion 7.3 a few years back. The Suburban is more car like in all regards versus the Excursion being truck like. It would accomplish your goal of downsizing but what about in the future when you do get another boat? Suburban is nice but it doesn't tow like the Excursion. As Sydwayz already said I wouldn't trade your Diesel Excursion for a 6.0 Suburban. Maybe find a decent car or small SUV to drive and limit use on the Excursion, save it for future use.

Not that it changes things much but the truck is at a dealership. It's not private owned trade for trade.

That was what the Chevy dealership is offering me to take my Excursion.

My truck is a FL truck, it's actually Statement Marines old truck they used when first starting out and pulling the boats all over.

No rust, solid frame, and zero body rust.

Cash Bar 05-20-2016 02:29 PM

Keep the Ex.

I had to tow my old TopGun from my warehouse one time with my parents Suburban 2500. It looked exactky like that one(could be) so I thought it would be no big deal. I think I aged 10 yrs in a 6 mile drive. Never again.

jtbooten 05-20-2016 03:17 PM

Don't trade. 6.0 GM a is gas hog. 12mpg at best empty. I pulled with my dad's 6.0 a few times and IMO my 5.3 1500 had better power.

Sold a 5.9 Cummins and bought a newer 1500 Chevy 5.3 and was never truly satisfied until I bought another diesel.

If you do get something else, stick with a diesel. I like your Excursion a lot!

THANK YOU.

I try and fix whatever is needed when it comes up and keep her washed and waxed as well. I am in no rush to move on from her but always keep an open ear.

Best way to do it IMO. Keep it till it becomes unreliable on long trips or it starts significantly draining your wallet. I'd say you will be good for while!

You know what you have.

turbofox54 05-20-2016 06:41 PM

Keep the Excursion. ...clean ones are hard to find now.

fordf350 05-20-2016 08:22 PM

Hey Nate: Curious as to why you would get rid of 01 anything to get a 02 that you nothing about.

RollWithIt 05-20-2016 09:17 PM

Definitely keep the Ex. Always liked how they look and yours sounds like a solid truck.

Never owned any car or truck longer than 3 years.

Just use to getting bored and swapping stuff.

How many miles on your Excursion?

Sell the EX as7.3's are rare.

Black Baja 05-22-2016 11:19 AM

If your Excursion has a sun roof you need to clean the drains...

What do you want for the Excursion?

No sunroof......I am a service Advisor so know the quick tricks.

I have no hard number and these trucks are all over from mid teens to mid 20's. I will entertain offers though.

Nate5.0 06-25-2016 04:09 PM

She sold today, too much cash to say no too. :(

Going to look at a 8.1L, 2500HD tomorrow.

You want at least a 2003 or later, and if you can find a 2007 that would be the best. There are some parts on the early ones that are NLA.

Nate5.0 06-25-2016 10:36 PM

Good info...tomorrow's peak was a 1 owner clean 2002

Nate5.0 06-25-2016 10:38 PM

Also found an 04 diesel but it's hunter green and honestly not a fan of that color

Sydwayz 06-25-2016 11:59 PM

I have a 2003, and it's much nicer than 2001/2002. As long as it's the LS or LT model, it get's the steering wheel radio controls, and a much upgraded center console; as well as more modern door/window buttons and the like. Front end wise, I prefer the look of the 2002/2002; BUT there are a LOT more parts/aftermarket/options for the 2003-2007.

Ya I like the front on the 01/02 as well.

It is the LT, duel power seats, leather, seat warmers, and all the bells and whistles. Like that it is only 1 owner and always in FL with zero rust and free of any major damage.

Still going to look at it but we will see.

Jupiter Sunsation 06-26-2016 08:38 AM

Nate I think you are nuts to buy a 15 yr old anything especially when you don't really need it for towing.

I sold my duramax with 170K on it and my thought was that I drove it 8 years without putting any big money in it so if I trade it now then I am out of it before I get stuck with the 2-3K repairs.

This guy has receipts for big stuff just like I had for the guy that bought my excursion. That helps ease the mind.

Also I refuse to have a payment on any car ever so new cars are no go. Have not had a car payment in 10+ years and not starting to have one now.

I see your point........I just hate pouring money into cars

Payments are pouring money to, just got to figure when the repairs are costing more then the payments.

Kind of went left field big time

97 Chevy 1500 Z71 with 89k on the dash. Was a friends truck who has more money then sense and had it just to drive around their properties. I prob wont keep it but it was too cheap to say no to. :)

plus it pulls the 24' just fine

Those are actually AWESOME trucks, completely bulletproof aside from maybe a headgasket replacement. Hang on to that one.

He took it to the dealer for a check up yesterday and a full detail. All that is wrong is the A/C has a leak, holds a charge but runs out. I work at a dealership so that is a easy to deal with issue.

$2800 :)

No rust, all power everything works, insanely clean paint, and newer tires. Not a bad deal.

I have a soft spot for those trucks. I've owned a few of that body style chevy over the years.
