Something that just came to my attention a few weeks ago: the long bed trucks now have a 4" longer wheelbase. They slid the rear axle back, all varieties of long bed trucks; regardless of cab and SRW/DRW configs.
It definitely looks different, maybe even a little "off". I'm curious about three things for those of you guys in the know: 1) WHY exactly did they do this? 2) How is city driveability? Does the longer wheelbase hurt turning and maneuverability? (I have not dug up turning radius specs yet.) 3) How it towing with the longer wheel base? Longer wheel bases typically 4) Where do you put the center of the 5th wheel/Gooseneck hitch now? Do you center it in the bed, or put it directly over the rear axle? Sydwayz did you figure it out yet? Cab got 4" bigger. |

They might be trying to fix the bucking sensation you get on certain roads with cclb trucks. Its a common complaint and will drive you nuts! Seems to only happen on concrete highways. From what I read the older wheel base trucks and the way concrete highways are poured, distance between pads, would cause the trucks to buck at highway speeds. My personal truck, 2011 cclb dually, will do it and its bad. I have had others complain about it too. Obviously a longer wheel base will drive better and tow better but I wonder if the bucking sensation will be fixed.

Same with my PSD Excursion on those damn highways. Enough to make you sick. I don't think the movement of the axle 4" is enough to fix it. Suspect there is another reason for the move.
Looking a brand new RCLB F150 across the street right now, and it appears longer there too. Reduces the distance from the hitch to the rear axle, by +/- 10%, which could be much bigger effect than stretching the wheelbase. |
The front wheel/axle looks to be moved forward a bit too.

Lets hope they fix that, I drive a RCLB F350 for work sometimes and it is an absolute nightmare to drive on a concrete highway unless you have12k+ lbs behind it.

So I'm looking at ordering/buying a...
KR or Platinum 2017 F350 CC LB SRW 4x4. I test drove one, and WOW, is that turning radius HUGE. I know it's a truck, and it's not small. But the turning radius has increased by 2 FEET compared to the 2016 model of the EXACT same truck; all due to Ford pushing the axles further apart (adding wheelbase, especially pushing the rear axle so far back). Honestly, it FEELS like I'm still driving my 2000 with Leaf Spring front suspension and the turning radius of an Aircraft Carrier. Any rumors if this is changing in 2018? |

Cabo Trip
Just got back from Cabo. I drove down to haul my Dads 29' ugly ass fish boat back. It weighs 12K with the trailer. The '17 250 did a great job. Its defiantly not a dually though. First 4x4 I've had in 25 years! A little soft but really comfy. I really think the 4 rear tires on a dually way lessens the sidewall flex. I would not want to tow anything heavier with this 4x4.

Mine is here.. 1700 miles so far...
Its a good truck all around... But going back for passenger door adjustment on thursday... I guess it wasn't right from day one... My prior/other truck is a '14 F350 Dually. This 250 is much quieter than the 14... The cab is much bigger and the new dash is nice and has a much better display. You can tell that the frame is stiffer than the prior body style.. I was actually trying to find a good leftover '16, and missed out on one because I didn't move fast enough... I went with the '17 to have the "new model"... It was only about $5k more than a 16 leftover so I figured resale would certainly cover that... I still have not come to grips with the aluminum body.. I don't know if I ever will... I honestly don't understand the logic on doing this on a HD pickup.... This is a huge step backward in my opinion. I haven't towed with this truck yet... |

Thanks:drink: I went with 35x12.50s on 20x9 wheels... 2" BDS lift in front, 1" taller block in back with Fox shocks... I think it looks and drives better than stock.... The skinny stock tires moved around a lot more... The truck feels better with more rubber on the road... I was going to go 4" with 37s but didn't want the truck too tall to be usable... Half of me wishes I did though... Looking at bumpers next, and white painted grille... I don't like chrome.... Anyone looking at a Ford needs to be sure they get the tailgate step.... And you can't add it to a truck that doesn't have it as the tailgate is different... The tires are Nitto Ridge Grapplers... 12 ply... I think they call them F rated.... They don't seem to roll over on the corners so they may do well with a big trailer... I'll have one of our MTI-V 42s behind it in the near future and left you guys know how it does with 21,000lbs on it... |
21,000 pounds Tim!?!?!?
whats it made of Iron? |

Sigh...but with prices the way they are with trucks I'm keeping my '08 10 cylinder F250. It's in great shape and just sent it in to the body shop for $3000 worth of touch-ups to keep it in pristine shape. Has the white grill/sport package, 20"s polished mags, looks sweet. $3000 every few years to keep it nice is worth it considering new prices...and I can eventually put that into a BOAT.
Nice trucks fellas!! |
How are you guys seeing insurance on the new Super Dutys compared to the 11-16 models? I was a bit shocked going from my 13 F-150 to 16 F-150 when the insurance nearly doubled for a truck with the same sticker.

I think mine is $1600/yr...

No highway towing one real hills... Just from our Miami shop to Haulover Ramp... 30 mph... Don't let Sideways Brian see this pic or he will soil himself.... |

I am leaning toward ordering a 2018 F350 SRW SuperDuty (at the moment). I haven't gotten off my ass yet to sell my 2000 F350 and 2003 2500HD though.
The details about the 2018 F150 have been released, and they now show this "Marsala" color interior option on the Platinum trim: Attachment 569568 I would assume that this will also be on the 2018 SuperDuty Platinum option list as well. Personally... I'm just not a huge fan of the King Ranch logo/styling, but if I was buying a 2017 it would likely be a King Ranch. I don't like an all black interior. And the 2017 Platinum in "Brunello" interior was really dark, and overall wasn't a good hue either, especially in sunlight. (Pictured below) I wanted to like it, but it's just too dark on the interior of the truck; might as well be black. Hence why I was leaning KR if I jumped on a 2017. Attachment 569569 Just my thoughts and observations. |
You used to be able to order a DRW, crew cab short bed, can you still get one?

And what's worse is the lengthened wheel base on the 2017 Chassis makes for an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE turn radius. It feels like driving my 2000 F350 Dually with Leaf Spring front suspension when it comes to the terrible turn radius. |
Well, I took the first step. I put my 2000 7.3L F350 up for sale tonight. https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...4b&oe=59EF8A23
