After around 60 billion in bailouts 10 years ago that cost taxpayers 11 billion, it seems like deja vu all over again! I get the propaganda about being accountable to share holders, but how about accountability to the rest of the country. It is astounding that GM is in financial difficulty so soon after all the mea culpa's expressed a decade ago. Unfortunately, lots of working class folks will be taking a beating in the mid west and Canada due to these pending actions. Coincidentally, no plant closings in Mexico or China were announced. So ask yourself before you throw 80k into a new tow rig - do these despots deserve your financial commitment? I for one voted with my wallet in 2008 when I bought a new F-350, and have bought 3 more Ford trucks since. I admired Fomoco for liquidating assets instead of taking a public bailout. I love my C7 ZO6, but really despise the prevailing attitude at GM. Regardless of what the GM spin was back in 2008, they continue to demonstrate the inability to deny short term profit, for long term stability. The president is understandably disappointed, as this will certainly affect the gains he made in those states where GM is a major employer. Gm should reconsider the long term ramifications of this action. You can only cry wolf 20 or 30 times before people get suspicious. Just my 2 cents.

Ya but "we" get a rear engine 'Vette, so it's worth it no?

These new ones look hideous to the majority of critics, including myself, and the quality has gone done from the complaints that I’ve seen on the Facebook. Sometimes ugly things can grow on you but these are something only a mother could love. |
Ooops.Doub;e post.

GM worker here. Yeah im pissed and disappointed about the whole thing.
SO WHY IS FREE TRADE STILL IN EFFECT it enable US companies build overseas and pay the workers nothing then ship product back to US and charge the same as if it were built here. Every company is doing this. So who pockets are getting lined in order to screw there brothers over.https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...b897386cbe.jpg |

from GM The chevy looks hard to love, but many thought the same about the new Ram and Ford before their release. Trim package can make a big difference. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...bedd6c3b77.jpg from carhd2019.club if this GMC rendition is close on the front end, I'm in. |

Who you should be *****ing about are tens of thousands of people who continue to buy imported vehicles, yes I've heard all there B/S made in america, but the $$$$$ goes back to their country. Also the crap about "imported" vehicles built here, dont for a second think they setup plants here to help the american worker...its to beat tariffs and make them more $$$, also most if not all of their plants here are non-union, kinda puts US automakers behind the 8 ball. I do think the unions have a had a huge impact on bringing down the US automakers, they are a runaway train at this point. So whenever you are on the road, do a little car counting...see how many imports vs american made you see...and there lies the problem.
I remember watching the news starting in the late 60s. Every few years there was a big strike and plant shut down. It became the unions driving the companies in to the ground. Couldn't lay people off, etc. I believe this led to cutting quality to pay for the excess of the unions. Before the bailouts the legacy costs of retired employs added several thousand dollars to every vehicle. Legacy costs foriegn automakers don't have. The GM bankruptcy changed the rules of bankruptcy. It had been creditors where first inline. It was changed and creditors and shareholders were wiped out .a large share of the new GM went to the unions. The same unions who ran it I to the ground were rewarded. Also why should the general public buy from the big 3 even when Union auto workers bought foriegn cars. |
The way I see it, competition drives the market. It is a shame that Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep are foreign owned but I still have hopes that might change. I will still buy Jeep and GM products because they build the vehicles I like and have driven most of my life. I cant remember a single GM vehicle I've owned that I would call unreliable and I own 18 at home and in my business. The jeeps have had their problems but are easy to fix and my family loves them, (3 wranglers, 1 G cherokee).
The point is I'm not going to sweat what these companies have to do to create shareholder value and survive. If they don't perform according to the shareholders wishes then they have to change. Market conditions including tariff's are doing that right now thanks to the administrations incomprehensible trade policies. I do know that If we don't buy American vehicles, we will surely end up driving foreign ones. |
The new HD's would strongly encourage me to buy the old body style. GMC isn't terrible but the CHEVROLET is ugly

I was brand loyal while working 12 years for one of big three, our second car was from Japan.

Didn't Ford do the butt ugly turn lights above the head lights like 6-8 yrs ago?

I'm not a good judge of style I guess.... I hated the 1994 Dodge RAM new look when it was introduced... a buddy of mine who drove a KW for a living loved it! Said it reminded him of his tractor.... every other truck Mfg copied to some degree that style & it's still prevalent today on most PU Trucks.... so give it time.... maybe it will grow on you?

1. The new Silverado HD better have a great personality, because it’s ugly as sin. 2. GM cares nothing about people. They haven’t cared since the Flint sitdown strike. They still didn’t care when they exercised eminent domain and destroyed Pole Town (hey, they left Beth Olem cemetery in the parking lot, so that’s caring, right?). They still didn’t care when they shut down Chevy in the Hole, Central Foundry. etc. They are, for better or worse, a corporation responsible only to the shareholders and the almighty dollar. 3. Free Trade agreements are a major boon for drug smugglers. Traps in cars and trailers are way easier than using expensive offshore boats and planes. 4. My next new vehicle will still have a 1,4, or 5 for the first digit of the VIN (US assembly), or maybe a 2 (Canada), but it won’t be from GM anymore. My last GM employee family member has now passed, GM will get no further allegiance here. |
Fiat/Chrysler announced they'll open a new SUV assembly plant in the Detroit area.

They’re revamping Mack Ave engine plant to build Grand Cherokees. At least FCA is keeping plants inside Motor City limits. Guess I’ll have to start looking at Hellcats and Rams instead of Corvettes and Silverados. |

That’s news to me then... I heard they were bolstering production of the Grands in the old Mack Ave Plant (they already build Grands on Jefferson), but didn’t hear they were sending anything else to Detroit. I thought the KL Cherokees were built in Illinois. Still sux that you guys are losing GM Lordstown.... Lots of great B bodies and F bodies rolled out of that shop when it was new. |

We are about to experience a new era of electric cars that are fun, fast, affordable and practical and I'm kind of excited about that.

Your assessment is dead on. This latest action by GM is just an affirmation that employees, taxpayers and even President Trump matter not as long as they can post larger profits. Ford moving production back to the US last year was an admirable and supportive action, and bolstered their credibility with the country. The approach taken by FCA to revamp existing plants to produce new models is commendable, and exactly what GM should be undertaking. They could have posted a profit of 5 Bil instead of 7.5 Bil, and used the 2.5 Bil to keep their employees on, while revamping the existing plants. As for me, I will vote with my wallet. My C7 is the last GM product I will buy for a long time.
