Default GM 1500 3.0 Duramax

Does anyone have any experience with the new 3.0 duramax in the the current gen GM's? The max tow rating went up to 13K in a single model year 21 to 22. I've read the new motor had some teething pains with hard starting and a production stop.

I'm considering this model to replace my 2500 Avalanche 8.1

Just a few threads below yours.
Albeit says Suburban, everyone that chimed in were 1500 owners.
Doesn't clarify if 2022 model year though.

I have one, and love it. gas mileage tops out at 30mpg and for a full size half ton truck, that's pretty awesome. Mine is a 21 but from what I understand the difference between 21 and 22 with the gained towing capacity is an oil cooler, suspension upgrades and possibly gear ratio. I have pulled 7k with mine and was very impressed with the power. I will say one thing it doesn't have is the "punch" that you get from the 5.3 or 6.2 gas versions when pulling out to pass someone. That being said, I would give up the "punch" for the fuel economy and the torque of the 3.0 duramax. Hope this helps!

I appreciate the feedback so far. It may be dumb but I really want this thing to fit in my garage. The HD's are just so massive there is just no chance even with some major mods to my house. The fact they the increased the capacities for 22 are what piqued my interest. I really should go HD, but I've been towing my 35 with a 2500 Avalanche for years without too many headaches. The 1500's are now in that ballpark of my old 2500's capacities if not a bit more.

Not to mention going from 9-11 MPG to high 20's.....drool.

we have one in AT4 trim its been awesome so far average 30-33 they say it would be better if we changed to regular tires we did tow a 14,000 pound boat and it really comes alive like a tractor puller they must run quite a bit of boost

i had an AT4 last year with the 3.0l -- it was a great truck, good fuel mileage but i couldn't get 30mpg -- i was around 25 on highway, 20 city stop and go... i pulled my 11,000lb boat plus trailer weight and felt it was a bit small... the power was there but was a bit light in the ass. i went to a 2500 with the 6.6l gasser now. nice truck so far, i took it to North Carolina from Detroit last week and averaged 15mpg running between 75 and 80 mph empty both ways.

With what is going on with fuel prices right now i should have kept the 3.0 Dmax...

Great feedback! The guys with 21 models sounds like you really pushed the published rating limits and were mostly happy. The 22's with the Max Tow option have a new rear end, axle, diff, ratio's, springs and upgraded cooling. So, I think things are heading in the right direction in terms of the GM 1/2 tons addressing capacities compared to the competition.

I will note that I was not impressed with the idea of the oil pump drive needing replacement at 150k -- need to remove tranny to get at it... That is a bad design from my perspective.

I'd looked at the 3.0 Ford diesel when I bought my 2020 F-150, the torque was nice but the hp was low...something like 250 hp and 440 torque where the 5.0 V8 in my truck is 400 hp/400 torque, though the torque is at a higher rpm. Ultimately I went with the V8 for the hp and the SOUND, lol! I like the GM Duramax is inline-6 where the Ford was a V-6.
Ford recently discontinued their 3.0 diesel, leaving GM to party in that block. I have heard overall good reviews on the engine...the fuel mileage in particular, where 'real-world' experiences are indeed reflecting the marketing hype numbers for the most part.
