We've all heard about the $2Billion fine that Cummins is being forced to pay, as well as all of the trucks Ram is recalling for reprogramming.

NOW it seems that California, and other states are following suit on requiring the recall/reprogramming to be done to your truck BEFORE you can renew the DMV/BMV/whatever license plate registration.

A bit of advice: renew your vehicle registration for the maximum amount of time possible. Regardless of what your emissions/DPF system may or may not be on your truck, programming, aftermarket, bone stock, whatever...
...the last thing I want is the government telling me I can't legally put plates on it.

In Virginia, they allow us to renew for 3 years at a time. I just renewed mine for as long as possible, and I'll probably renew it each year to push it out 3 years, if I can.

Try not to make this political or send this thread down the crapper. You can choose to take the advice, or not.

Couple of questions. 1. How does Cummins stay in business if they actually pay the 2 billion dollar fine?
2. If Cummins really did what they are accused of, have they netted 2 billion dollars from the actions?
3. WTF is the EPA actually going to use the 2 billion dollars for and where is the accountability for it?

So you renewed in 2024 to get to 2027, make sense but you are going to try to renew again in 2025 to get to 2028? I may be interpreting your statement wrong. Sorry.

I'm so glad we dont have all that emissions stuf to worry about here in Ky. If you have a clear title and insurance, then you will be licensed and ready to go.

Washington DC and the surrounding VA & MD counties have emissions inspections, every 2 years. California does similar.
I dealt with it for years when I lived up there. But now I am out in the country and we only have yearly safety inspections.

But be aware, that this is not an emissions inspection on your Cummins. They are plain and simple making you provide proof that the dealer recall has been done before you get your new plates.

Yeah, they got 'Diesel Brothers' for sure, and seems like several other smaller shops that were doing "deletes", chips, etc. Look what they did to VW a couple of years ago. I hope it never happens but it seems it is just a matter of time before mandatory emissions checks for all states will be taking place.

Montana does lifetime plates/registration if a vehicle is 10+ yrs old. Buy tags once and never pay again
