Powerboatr,

Yup. It IS a 28’ boat. I think it’s overkill, but I’ve seen a couple 280 Silencers on triple axle trailers.

I always find it funny when people mention how big the boat is, while I am always thinking, compared to the rest of the boats that show up for the PokerRun, it’s a dingy.

Thanks. Brad.

Powerboatr,

To my knowledge, there are no twin engine 280 silencers, though. I could maybe justify triple axles with twin engines, even if they are small blocks.

Thanks. Brad.

You really don't need or IMO, want those type of bearing buddies when using the easy lube spindles. Just a dust cap with rubber plugs. You want easy access to the grease zerks.

Griff,

But what keeps thermal contraction from sucking water in past the rear seal when you back your hot hubs into the water? IMO, that is the whole appeal to the BearingBuddies. The spring loaded cap takes up that contraction, and water doesn’t get in.

I can tell you that, when I cleaned up my old hubs, to install the new bearing races, before the revelation I would be getting new ones, the grease, while a LITTLE “syrupy”, was clean, with zero evidence of any water, and the spindles looked brand new.

What the rep at Heritage told me to do is to install the hubs, which were pre-packed, set the bearing preload, give the grease zerks a dozen or so pumps with the grease gun, then remove the zerks, install the pre-packed Bearing Buddies, then pump the Bearing Buddies until the indicator shows 1/8-3/16” of stickout, and install the dust cap. Then, once a year, knock the Bearing Buddies off, reinstall the zerks, and repeat the process.

My dad wasn’t a fan of them, as he always said, “Never grease means soon will cease”. But the reality is “Never water means bearings last forever”. Proverbially speaking, of course.

Thanks. Brad.

Brad
my brain just asked about gear oil filled hubs?
Since I will do springs in the fall
I will pull hubs at that time inspect
depending on how they look

I have gear oil hubs before on a car hauler
Awesome
But never dunked it in the water

.

Had those caps on my old scarab for 2 years before changing to bearing buddies never a problem.....i always put a light smear of black RTV on the hub just before installing the cap and some more RTV on the rubber dust cap...
Also had them on my old Stinger and same thing. They can be made to work. :) Oh and i always waster like 10min in the parking lot getting ready before launching to help cool the hubs down before dunking so im sure that helps to :D

I've had the easy lube spindles with the caps I linked for almost 20 years on my trailer. I don't get any water in mine. Its only about a 30-40* difference in temp between my hubs and the lake water temp.
