[QUOTE=Rippem]Congrats!

check the rear diff. should be 1/4 to 3/8 below fill plug. They habitually come through half-full. Use GM's synthetic known as "grape juice". Expensive...$28+ retail a qt., I pay $19 something. Use it, it's proprietary and designed for that Eaton locker. Change it once (about 3 1/2 qts.) after your first big tow. 20 min job. Eaton recommendations. ;)

Change the Allison spin on filter at that time also...$7.50 at an Allison/Mack dealer. 10 min. job. Stealers nab $25 just for that filter only! Pre-fill it on the bench and you won't have to add.

Change the oil+filter at 1000 miles to get rid of sand cast, flash, and bearing coatings...and perhaps again at 5K, depending on workload. Then go to extended intervals. Don't do synthetic 'till at least 10K.

Also, when you change the tranny filter it's a good time to start putting the right fluid in,Allison transynd,GM phuked every one with their cheap dextron 3,smitty

Re: Duramax Rules!! (just for Stecz)

i worked for chevy for years and have always been a bowtie guy, but the new gm trucks have the weakest frames ever put under an american pick up. i've run body shops for twenty years and have never replaced as many frames as with the new chevy truck...the whole front section gets demolished in front end collisions. from the curved area behind the front tire forward they cave in and it doesn't take much of a hit to do them in. the previous body style would take a major front end or head on collision to waste a frame a render it unrepairable. i also saw a lot of the new dura maxs in our service dept with injector problems and am not sure that gm has resoleved the injector issue yet. so get the extended warranty as the injectors are around 750.00 ea retail. but they are good looking trucks, i just like the older trucks as i feel the construction and conventional radiator support front ends were a LOT more crash worthy. but do enjoy your new ride. :drink:

Uhh......."crumple zone"...so the occupant(s) don't absorb or react (get thrown as hard) to/by the impact, the vehicle does. It's called occupant safety.
When you see 'em start folding into the passenger compartment let me know!

Nobody I know is buying injectors under 100,000 miles, failure or not, unless they're getting f'ed by a stealer. If they don't know any better...they deserve it! ;)

Hey Artic or anyone else. I just want to confirm. Are you saying when I change tranny fluid use the Transynd GM Part No. 12378515 instead of the Dexron III? I see in the manual their saying use Transynd for the manual trans. but still Dexron III for the automatic.

I think the Duramax/Allison combo combined with a a chip aqnd exhaust is such an awesome setup. It towed my boat with such ease you hardly knew it was back there.

Re: Duramax Rules!! (just for Stecz)

#1 go to phone book, find Mack dealer.
#2 go see them and buy a 5 gal. pail of TranSyn D. It'll have a proprietary Allison label on it. The best guesses are that it's manufactured by Citgo/Texaco, though you can't buy it from them easily...if at all.
#3 if you're not comfy doing the flush to the TS D yourself, the shop will have the equipment to do it.
#4 WARNING...this is not a cheap project whether you do it yourself or not...but well worth it.

DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER buying that fluid from GM. There won't be much lube left after they run in into you for the fluid and charge you $25+ for the $7 spin on filter. FIND AN ALLISON DEALER.

Close, it's made by Castrol for Allison. ;)

Hey Bill....I was wondering how that chip was doing for ya. Hadn't heard from ya in awhile. Do you have any tires left on it? ;) Those things are probably the best bang for the buck on the market right now.

Transynd was developed specifically for the Allison 1000/2000 transmissions in a joint venture w/Castrol,around 45 $ a gallon at most allison dealers, well worth it!!!

We had bought a 2004 GMC crew cab dually from Chuck Winegardner. At the time we also kept the '97 F350 crew cab. We recently sold the GMC and last night traded in the '97 F350 on an '04 F350 crew cab dually that we saw at his Chevy dealership. Looked at it this past weekend and it had "Jay's Marine" on the back. Bill picked it up last night in the snow. Hope to get pictures this weekend.

Congrats on your new truck Craig.

Re: Duramax Rules!! (just for Stecz)

I've got an '04 and an '02 and love 'em. The '02 is decidedly more fun as it's got all the goodies, both cosmetic and mechanical. Edge Juice/Attitude is the only way to go on these trucks. :D

That generator, as I found out later, scales out around 16,500 lbs. Now I'm feeling pretty good about the Top Gun or Cafe Racer plan as it pulled like it wasn't there.

Craig, since Bill is too busy at work to answer, I will. We like the Ford better. That is not to say that the GMC is not a great truck (cause it is) but it drives more like a car than a truck. The Ford is a truck and drives like one. To tell you the truth, what bothered me the most was a conversation Bill had with someone at the Cambridge races last September. They said, "Your pull what boat with that truck??!! Just make sure the hitch doesn't pull away from the frame."

So, the idea of our 47' beast getting tossed on the road, did sit too well with either of us. Anyway, Bill has always liked the Fords better and the '97 F350 pulled everything he ever needed (including the Fountain...to the ramp). :D

Can't wait for summer....see you on the water.

Patti

Rippem 03-09-2005 02:33 PM

Re: Duramax Rules!! (just for Stecz)

Yea, there's a couple horror stories of the GM hitch itself failing, but not the frame ever that I've heard of on all the truck forums.

That's why I skipped it on the order and put a real hitch on. ;)

You can't trust either one of them to get everything right (see transmission failures and front end vibration problems on the Ford) both much more common than hitch failures on the GM. :D
