Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Just purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab 4X4 Cummins with 59,000 miles and in magnificent shape. I've driven a few of them and never noticed this before. While at highway speeds if i drop the hammer she has no power above 23-2500 rpm's. Its almost like its running out of gear, but if i back off throttle and let her shift outta 3rd and back into overdrive she'll pick up speed  . I work for a dealer and drove a 99 Ram with the cummins and it pulled strong to redline. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
there was a rear gear option in those years, do the two trucks have the same rears? Has the 30K trans maintenance been done? I had a 2001 with a diable puck, best truck I ever owned. Only problem I ever had was the trans and after the service it was perfect. Best truck I ever owned. sold it with 42K.

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
i'm having a dealer we do business with look at it tomorrow AM. was told to have them check fuel pressure (may have a weak lift pump). i just installed an AFE stage 2 intake, with a 4inch mandrel bent exhaust from turbo back. i have the edge comp box under back seat not yet installed. dont wanna put it in til i get this condition taken care of. trans juice looks and smells fine ? unsure if it was ever service but i may have them do it tomorrow and also wanna look into shift kit as well...THANKS
PS- will also have them find out what rear is in it |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
call the dealer with the VIN and they can tell you over the phone what rear end is in it. Can also tell you if all the services have been done.
doesn't sound like a tranny issue to me.... |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
i'll give you another for instance...if you take off from a light with pedal to floor, as soon as the rpms get into 2500 range it just falls on its face, which it also does as it runs through the gears. if i let off pedal and allow it to shift into over drive she'll continue to pick up speed
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Sounds like the lift pump is going. Ck out the Turbo Diesel Registry on a search and they will have all the answers to your problems. It is a great site for the turbo diesels. Dwight

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
I am wondering if it could be the beginning of the end of the injection pump?
Kirk, from what I'm told by many tuners and diesel tech's when the injection pump fails it stops all together with no signs. |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
there are 2 pumps on these trucks...lift pump gets fuel to injection pump...the only reason the injection pumps go is fi the lift pump fails
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Been looking around on the diesel registry site. Great info. It seems that there are ALOT of lift pump failures. I gues my question should be is my lift pump starting to fail. Some owners find that their lift pump is failing by pressure readings alone. I do not have a pressure guage so maybe the higher rpm hesitation is from weak lift pump. I guess I should have it checked.

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
check your fuel filter , if it stoped up you will lose power. i'v got a 2003 dodgectd 6 speed and flat love it . also running 4/in pips with out a box the computer will cut boost , could be it . :drink: robbie

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
The pump may still be under warrantee if it is considered to be under the Cummins umbrella of parts. Ck with the dealer..Dwight

With a weak lift pump, the injection pump could be very quick to fail, and that = BIG MONEY. www.turbodieselregister.com is a great source for information regarding your truck. |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
its at the dealer now gettin a pyro, boost, and fuel pressure guage installed. i made them aware of the situationa and we'll see what they say. i wa stold that the psi's shoulkd be as follows..cranking psi 10-12 and idel psi 13-16 these figures are after the filter
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Have them check the IAT module , which I believe is the speed sensor. After that , fuel filter, then lift pump. If the injection pump starts going you will get what is called the "dead pedal" . I've got the FASS on mine and hopefully won't have to worry about fuel delivery issues again.
The gear ratio is fine, the tallest one you could get was a 3:54 which is plenty. Sound's like you've got some goodies to install. Keep some cash handy for the trans upgrades. When you intall that Edge Comp and hook the wire up , it will be a matter of time before the trans goes. |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Lift pumps are a dime a dozen on those years. The dealer is the most expensive source. Cummins is second. The cheapest pumps will be found at...a Case dealer. Yea, Case uses Cummins engines in their tractors. Regarding the FASS system...I'm still trying to sort the chaff from the BS on that one. Just my opinion.
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Cord ,
I know what you mean , about the BS on the FASS. But as far as I was concerned it was an argument between the owner of FASS and his son who owns the Perforater which both do the same things. I just wanted a aftermarket pump that worked. As far as people saying the truck is faster or quieter, that is BS . It's just a pump. I've had friends use the Carter pusher pumps and they failed after a year or so and the lift pumps are a joke , even if they only cost $150 or so. Why don't you care for the FASS ? |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
lift pump from a dealer is 6-700, reman'd with exchange are 225, and i found a source for brand new ones at 195 no exchange...

Buy gauges for pyro, boost and fuel psi. That will tell you everything you need to know, or a Bluechipdiesel.com Box. I love mine for the last 70,000 miles. :p |

If you don't want to spend the money for the FASS, go to Diesel Dynamics or BD Power and check out their pusher pump and fuel line kits. Corey |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Or just call Boot.....
He'll tell ya some info... |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
It's just a fuel pump! When my lift pump went out, it was suggested that I look at the Fass system. For the price that they wanted, I could replace the lift pump twice! From the dealer! No thanks. You asked. Please don't beat me up! :p

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Being as we're on the discussion of the Cummins, I have a quick question. Air box related.
When I purchased the truck the dealer popped the hood and showed me a few things. One thing he pointed out was the fancy air filter gauge to tell me when it was time to change the filter. I was wondering if these things are known to fallout on their own,(as mine is now missing) and now with a 1 inch open hole in the side of my airbox, how will it affect the truck? I had an oil change done only once and it was by the dealer. They are the only ones that have ever been under the hood and that was the last time I had the hood up until this week when I decided to wash the winter salt out of the engine compartment. I was considering the aftermarket air filters, but until then, I was wondering if any damage can be done with this open hole. |

I had the same problem on my 02 , It got worse & worse but did not do all the time . It was the fuel pump ! |

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Should replace it, or at least cover the hole as it is post filter. I believe they just push in, so I could see how one could fall out. It's not a really critical piece as that filter will be dirty long before the filter minder moves much.

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Cord ,
You must have a fuel pressure gauge on your truck then right ? You can see the stock lift pumps can barely keep up with the volume it takes to keep the VP from starving. I know the FASS and others are just another electric pump that can fail just like the stock stuff BUT at least the FASS can keep up with the VP. I already had one VP warrantied and don't want to pay for another. The $475 for the FASS which supposedly is used on some of the big rigs was cheap insurance. Now of couse they come out with that new mechanical pump , now that's probably the way to go. I've had friends try those pusher pumps and they eventually failed too. Are you done snowmobiling ? I hopefully can head up to Mitch's next weekend. I'm hoping to get another 3 rides in. Even if I have to head to Canada ! |

Dealer says they have never seen one fall out. Then I asked it to be covered under warranty and he says it's hard to warranty something that they don't have a part to return back. As I then explained to him that their dealership has been the only ones under the hood for 1 oil change, he suggested to bring it in and discuss it with the manager. Also he suggested to close it off as well. Nothing like having to slap duct tape on a $43,000 truck. :D :D :D |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
well got mine back today..guages all installed ...temp peak approx 650, boost peak approx 28, and fuel pressure at idle 12-13...under heavy accel at top of rpm drops to almost 5-6 (good or not ?) and as far as the condition i explained to them...tech couldnt verify customers complaint.

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
Speed sensor
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
anybody know what the minimum fuel pressure should be ?
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
5 to 7 PSI at wot is fine. Should have 14-15 at idle. If your max egt is 650 then I'm guessing your probe isn't in the exaust manifold. Watch out, that is a false reading. You should add about 350 for pre turbo readings. I suggest you drill and tap your manifold and put your sensor there. Buy a fuel pressure gauge and check it every oil change or put one in the cab. Lift pumps are $160 from Cummins and can be changed in about 20 min with a little practice. I always carry a spare.
Have fun, Cat Skinner |
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
i have pyro, boost, and fuel pressure guages in the cab. cold air intake and a 4 inch exhaust from the turbo back...max boost at wot is 28, the hottest it gets is 650, and at wot fuel psi drops to 5-6...at idle its about 12-13..i'll have to look and see where they installed the probe

Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
How much did your performance change Bern when you changed out the exhaust to the 4"?
|
Re: Any Dodge Cummins heads around ?
it is noticeable better throttle response, turbo spools up quicker and sounds awesome...

My pyro runs about 530- 640 under normal running when I turn the fuel up to 63% over stock if will reach 1150+ for a second then the box defuels till it's under 1100. |
