Re: Vr-1/290 Sc
Same hull.... different decks. The 290 SC has a cabin that is more useable with an enclosed head. The VR-1 is built for speed so their is not much head room in the cabin. You can't go wrong with either boat, just decide if you want more speed or more room. It is about a 5 mph difference between the two boats with the same power.

Re: Vr-1/290 Sc
Is the 496 HO an appropriate engine for either of these boats, or are they somewhat underpowered for quick planing, mid-range and top end performance? Of course the 525 will provide better performance, but is the 496 HO solidly a good package?
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Vr-1/290 Sc
Ken,
I ran Gifford Marines new 29sc with a 496HO at velocity fest. Time to plan about 4 seconds, not much midrange power, top end we saw 73mph on gps. We had three people on the boat, and a half tank of fuel.
Hope this helps.

Re: Vr-1/290 Sc
Friend of mine with a 290 SC and a 496HO is seeing less than 70 except under ideal circumstances..... he has a set of CMI headers coming for it.
He previously was running a VR-1 (w/ windshield) with the 496HO and that was a better package.... low 70's consistently.
I have a VR-1 (w/ windshield) with a turned up 500EFI (equivalent to a 525) and see 80 consistently and 82+ every once in a while.
Speed costs money.... just tell them how fast you want to go!
