Re: Big Red (?)
Big Red was the plug for the original 38' Velocity we built in the Pompano Beach, Fl. factory, on Powerline Road. It was built in a smaller warehouse in east Pompano by an excellent wood craftsman & all epoxy clear-coated on the inside, including the engine compartment. It's true length is 39' 2" with an 8' beam. The reason it was marketed as a 38' boat for many of the early years, was due to the targeted market of the Wellcraft model "377" Scarab, which was popular then(early to mid-eigthies) & one of the largest production "offshore" boats of the day. It was first rigged with locally built big-block Chevy's & No. 4 Mercruiser SpeedMasters. Usually running in the low to mid-90's speed range, but has been over 100. I believe engine builder Dave Jarvis of Ft. Lauderdales, Air-Speed Engineering built some of the earliest big-blocks for Big Red. We built very few fiberglass 38's while in Pompano before 1986, when Steve sold out to Regal, due to under-capitalization. A fiberglass 38' rigged with engines & outdrives weighed approximately 9,700 pounds. Big Red was raced very rarely & for very few races. Before selling to Regal, production of delivered boats was: (2 1/2 ) Velocity 22's exactly, per week...(1) 30' Velocity per month, and (1) 38' Velocity per year. After 1986, the 38' was relabeled a 41' with the addition of a platformed deck mold. When bragging about Big Red to a customer, Steve would always like to say..."She's all wood"...because the boat looked so good, that it looked like fiberglass from the outside. This boat should not be left outside in the elements, ever...as it will deteriorate rapidly. A great piece of offshore history. Ed
