The question has been asked so I'll answer.

I owned a '93 26' (280 now ) and a '97 320 for a total of 9 years I think, and certianly 6-700 hours of running. Pics have been posted before...search my username in this forum. Both boats treated me well in terms of structural longevity and held up well cosmetically, though they certianly received the very best in retentive care. I run the St. Lawrence and Eastern Lake Ontario. I certianly had both boats out in big conditions beyond thier design, and they always got me home. Not so much as a stress crack in either of them. A+ there.

As far as fit and finish quality, well...there were some shortcomings that annoyed me, but I paid and sold both for the right money...so in terms of cost of ownership I can't complain regardless.

Small builders suffer with turnover and even availability of workers, so build quality/consistency can be irregular at best.

So why don't I have one now?

#1 I wanted a 35 footer and there was no offering.

#2 As much as I really enjoyed the "fun factor" and capabilities of the pad bottom in certian conditions...you pay a price for it in ride quality a good portion of the time. I had had enough of the sacrifices.

#3 I wanted McLeod cockpit (Steve will NOT deal with them), more consistency in build/finish, excellent support from the builder after the sale, and a sizable known used market share on the other end. That seemed to spell FORMULA.

#4 The deal: I was sniffing around at 353's and came across the DEAL OF A LIFETIME on a loaded brand new boat. (Thanks Erickson Marine in Mn.) I considered it destiny, did it, and to this day I'm glad I did!
The Formula ownership experience has been...well...everything we've heard the Formula ownership experience is like, and then some. (Thanks to Darryl at Formula, Erickson, and our very own Robert Nelems...who himself is a pillar in the boat dealer community regardless of brand).

I'm hooked up with a quality product (not perfect, none of them are, I don't care what you pay for it) with known value holding and market share, excellent builder/dealer support, a great ride and features, bla, bla, bla...

No regrets about owning the Velocities or the Formula.

Bashing is bad etiquette here on the forum and without it the place stays friendly...
after all we all have the same disease!
Nuff said!

Truth be told, the boat was an amalgamation of different components (aka confused) by the nature of it being primarily a marketing platform for a number of marine suppliers "teaming" together. The accompanying press releases had almost a dozen companies being credited from the resin to the powertrain to the cabin materials. This was truly a collaborative design endeavor and I think it's fair to say that the result would have been more cohesive if it was a singular vision. Still - it's a very unique boat that draws attention as intended and it will be just the ticket for someone.

I will say this...

It's notable and commendable that Steve does all kinds of "interesting" combos. ie: Ilmors, Hemi's, interior layouts, different building materials in and out, the 280 "no power" deal. ect, ect.

I think he's having "fun" building/selling boats and trying different things. I think his product often appeals to the "eclectic" boat buyer, and he's willing to do some crazy stuff if somebody wants it, or just to see if it appeals.

There is certianly nothing wrong with any of that!

Mr. Ragged, by your own admission you've owned several Velocity's...... were they not "REAL" boats??

Now that you own something better it's time to throw Velocity under the bus?

Quit beating around the bush and tell us what your b!tch is Velocity??

Have been lurking in this thread a while.

My 2 cents is that the project boat styling wise is disjointed (wood panels and a brass tap in the head??......yikes ).

Having said that, I have been gathering information on the 41 looking at a possible one time big leap to the 40 foot range.

Question: Velocity lists the weight at 8500 pounds I think. With engines? Seems way too light.

I peeked at Mark L's at Hutchinson's in Alex Bay NY yesterday. That baby is BIG.

I am looking to go bigger and the speed and cabin room of the 41 caught my eye.

2 on the OSO listings that are not selling like hotcakes though .

Talking Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Why is my boat in this thread,HYMM.Yes I bought the boat from Peter/Ragged Edge.To get it where it is today,I have spent alot of money to get it set up properly,NO PUN INTENDED PETE,but it had several weak points which since have been corrected,Drives,Carbs, and a few other things.Since I purchased the boat I have found 10 MPH and the WOW factor is way up and I have still not been passed by a Fountain and plan to try and keep it that way.Pete there is not one thing on this boat that is the way it was when I purchased it from you 2 years ago,it has been de rigged and re rigged properly, also some factory issues were taken care of as well.I am not going to take any cheap shots at anyone because we all know that all boats have there plusses and minuses and at this time I am happy with my current situation unless I can fint the old Cal Custom 41 Velocity. Also there seems to be some concern about the paint on my boat,I own a body shop and it has also been altered since the puchase from Peter So that can be laid to rest I am tired of hearing about that.My boat Was purchased 2 years ago and the boat of today is powered differently, painted different ,on a different trailor, different speeds 10 MPH Faster and Reliable. Also the NAME has been Alterd to be different. The boat was given its name by a very special person and I just could not bring myself to totaly changing the Name in respect for that person,Pete you know what I mean.I love my Velocity and that is that. You put up a boat the same length and the same power I will be willing to bet who would come out on top, especially if the person knows how to run a boat.

292SR-1:

Welcome to the Velocity forum! The 41 "Double Eagle" is a concept boat kind of like auto makers building concept cars. I t gives the manufacture a chance to show creativity, new technology etc. You display it to attract people to come look at your products. I started this thread because I thought the boat was unique I didn't mean for it to confuse anyone.

If you are looking for a boat in the 40 range the Velocity is the boat for you. I researched for almost a year before I bought my 390. I have a friend with a 38 Fountain and I seriously considered them. They are inexpensive and a million out there for sale. All it took was one ride and I've been hooked ever since. The quality, rigging, Paint, everything is excellent. Oh I forgot Faaassssttt. I like speed. These forums are fun and educational but just get a ride and judge for yourself!!
