Default 280 prop and rpm question

Got to splash my 2000 280 454mpi 385 hp for the first time. The guy I bought it from has a bravo 24 on it. says it runs the best with it. Also have the original 26 hydro. At 50 mph I'm doing 5000 rpms. I know the rpm range is 4600 - 5000. at full throttle it will go up to 5800 rpms. Called the previous owner and he said it runs at 5500 rpms and the dealer said it's ok there. Shouldn't the rev limiter kick in or is my gauge wrong. Haven't tried the original one yet.

Guage problem - if it's Faria guage there is a setting to select a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engine. I'd check this first. Good luck.

Likely the gauge.
Rev limit is 5150 or 5200rpm.

A 24 inch Bravo may be too little prop. Try the 26 Hydro.

I think the Hydro is a 25. Tried putting it on but I guess I was missing a washer for it. Didn't know it was a different hub from the Bravo.

I've been told that a 26p B1 will be the best overall prop for my 502 Mag powered 280 Vel.

Put the stock 25 Hydro back on today. Took longer to plane but once I got going tached out at 5400 and only hit 56 MPH. Was wondering the previous owner had wacked his lower unit and had the skeg repaired and siad they put new parts in. Is it possible they might of changed the gear ratio? Checked the back of the tach and it is set to 8 cylinder.

Use a gps. you may be going 68mph and not even know it. Otherwise, you've got bigger problems than the prop.
