Default 88 Velocity

Heading on a roadtrip this week to pick up an 88 230 Velocity.. ok i know it was made in the regal years but it has to be a step up from the 190 baja i had.. Boat looks to be real clean, just needs a good buff or repaint on the hull.. Has a 454 mag/bravo and was told it runs 65 on gps.. Since i cant find much info on these i figured i would post up for opinions here on how they are, what to look for (besides the normal rot check), ect.. Any feedback would be great.. Thanks.

i think in 88 the mag was a 330 hp if so the mid 60's should be right on the money. if i remember it should have a 23 pitch hydro on it

That motor cost a lot of money, I better buy a cheap oil filter to cut cost.

I owned a 1988 Regal Velocity with the same motor package. Boat ran 65+ MPH all day long. It was one of the best boats I've ever owned...easy to trailer, handled decent water for it's size, was fuel efficient, and an absolute ball to drive. The cabin is actually useable for a small boat and can be overnighted in. The bottom is based on the 22' Steve Step Velocity with a EURO styled deck and swim platform added. My boat saw regular use in S. Fl, the ocean and Biscayne Bay and I never had any problems other than the sunlounge hatch cracking where the hinges attach.

I love those boats. Merc used the Magnum designation for the 330 hp only in 1987 and coupled it with the Alpha drive that year. Some show up on 88's as well, but since it has the Bravo drive I expect it actually is the Magnum engine. I have a 22' center console.

Not exactly...they offered the 7.4 330hp motor with the Alpha and the 454 Magnum 365hp motor with the Alpha up to 1987. The Bravo 1 drive came out late in 1987 and the boat could be ordered with the 7.4 Bravo (330hp) or the 454 Magnum/Bravo (365 hp).

The Magnum was 330 hp in 1987.
