New 220 being built

I traded my 22 Velocity in and partnered with friend. Velocity is building a new 220 for us. It will have a Merc 525EFI with an ITS drive in it. My old 22 was a blast. This one should be impressive.

DKerns 09-09-2009 08:46 PM

Sounds like a nice package!! Keep us posted!

Velocity Vector 09-09-2009 09:37 PM

Are you sure that's going to be enough HP to keep it on plane?

Revd Up 09-09-2009 09:51 PM

That should be fun!

modvp 09-10-2009 10:35 PM

Congrats! Are you having your layup done with S-glass and vinylester resin?

I will aske them. it is already out of the mold and in rigging.

DisturbedVelo22 09-21-2009 10:39 PM

Really? When I talked to velocity they said they wouldn't rig a 220 boat with hp500 let alone a 525. Prolly aren't so picky now, just happy to sell a boat. I'll be interested to know how the set it up and how it handles. Keep us updated!

Engine is in

The Engine is in. The x dimension is 5 1/2 in higher than my old one. They are having to raise the engine cover to accomodate the engine. The nice thing is it is easy to get to the bilge. I will try to post photos.

Yeah, post some pictures of your windshield. I was looking to replace my broken windshield on my 2004 Velocity 220 and Steve said that they are now using a newer version on a 22 thats being built since the company who made the original version has folded. That was probably your boat he was referring to.

Revd Up 10-05-2009 08:31 PM

I like the idea of building a little rocket. Put the long tabs on it to help keep it down in the rough. I just went from the Dana 900's to the 1000's and it does make a difference in rough water. Nothing better than whipping the twins when they think they have you beat.

5 1/2 HIGHER??!!! Now I'm interested, what year was your old boat and what actually is the x dem of the old and the new boat? I'm really interested to hear how this boat handles and what kind of speed you get. Sounds like its going to be a fun boat, I'm jealous!

John, do you meen the propshaft is going to be 5-1/2" higher?
The "X" dim is the distance from the bottom of the boat to the crank shaft of the engine/drive shaft of the outdrive.
Are you using a shorter than standard drive?
If the engine is really being raised 5-1/2" vs. the old boat, I hope that does not screw with the CG of the boat. I general you want the engine mounted as deep as possible / as close to the water as possible for best handling...
I could see using a drive that is 2 or 3" shorter and raising the engine 2 or 3" not 5-1/2", but I guess Steve knows his boats better...

sl 10-06-2009 01:18 PM

John, I was at the factory last week - saw your boat. Looks great! That's going to be one crazy ride. It looks like your use of an ITS and sportmaster gives additional flexibility in the X dim. Can't wait to hear what kind of speed you get. Steve

Pat McPherson 10-09-2009 11:36 AM

John,
I guess this is your old boat...

I like these 22s...

Hey DKerns,
Are you sure you don't want to trade yours in on my boat?

The windshield is supposed to in next week.

I don't have the actual X-dimension, but it is high. the top of the outdrive is at the base of the cap. There is all kinds of room under the engine. They were debating wheather to run the exhaust through the transem or the cap since it is so high. I would say the prop is going to be about 5 inches higher than my old boat. It is also going to be about 7 inches further aft due to the ITS drive.

The tabs are 380s. they may cut some off when they are propping the boat. The tabs are longer than what I had on a Victory 33. My old Velocity 22 didn't have or need tabs.

I know you are excited to shove sticks

I was going to correct you and say stick since its a single but then I realized what that sounded like.:lolhit:

That ITS definitely is thicker on top, meaning the mounting looks higher than mine even if the x dem was the same height but that x is probably a good 3 to 4 inches higher than mine. Have they talked about prop selection with you? I have to imagine they're planning on going with a five blade on that boat. I'm really interested on how this boat is going to plane/handle. Also those tabs seem way too long for that boat, but I'm sure stepp knows his stuff. Would you tell them to hurry up with that thing!?

It actually has 2 throttle cables, one for the stick and one for the hotfoot. I can choose which one I want to use and change it at the engine.

Kenny said the X-dim was 5 1/2 higher than my old boat.

They are going to spend some time proping the boat. They mentioned they will probably remove some tab at that time too.

My partner in the boat made me promise I would not be there for the proping. He wants to be on the boat with me when we run it for the first time. He travels a lot and I do the same for my job. He was afraid he was going to be out of town for the proping and I would be on the lake. It now looks like I will be out of town and he will be around, but since he made me promise, he also can't go to the lake.

My wife is really starting to get nervous. She doesn't like to go over 40 . Jorge had her at 85 in his Dragon. I am hoping with the tabs I can go a little faster with her on it. Needless to say, when Jorge and I run it for the first time, she will not be around.

OK I think I have figured this photobucket stuff out. This is the full album from spraying the gellcote in the mold to the trailer. I will update this as I get more photos.

Wet Boat

They put the boat in the water today. all systems worked flawless. It ran great, but it looks like the X-dimension was a little high. They are dropping it a couple of inches to get a little more bight.

This project is coming to a close. They are ready for another project.

Still seems high, considering I'm at 4 5/8's. Although I'm prolly an inch low.

jdcorbitt3 10-30-2009 06:19 PM

2" drop worked

They ran the boat today. They hit 90 and that was not full throttle. This is going to be fun. I have downloaded a couple more pics. Not much longer and we will be on the lake.

I will let you know when I find out. I do know that with the ITS drive the prop shaft is 7" further aft. That should allow for a higher shaft height, much like the transom step does. I am looking forward to my first ride in it as well.

old man dave 11-01-2009 03:06 PM

I was vacationing in Orlando last week and stopped by the Velocity shop. Your boat looks awesome. The workmanship is first class. Just getting the exhaust through the transom is a work of art. Have fun with your new boat i would.

jdcorbitt3 11-04-2009 03:46 PM

92mph today with a 5 blade Maximus prop. I think it was a 33" pitch. Now it is time to break the engine in and have a little fun and then come back to see what else it will do. For me 92 is plenty fast in a 22' boat. 65 in my old one was impressive. Steve says when you are cruising at 60 and hit it the gps can't keep up with the acceleration. I am in training for a week and can't get to the boat until I get back. This is going to be a long week.

John

DisturbedVelo22 11-14-2009 06:51 PM

so any updates?

jdcorbitt3 11-15-2009 04:30 AM

Delivery Day !!!

The Day Came!!! We Ran the boat with Steve and took it home. This boat is fast! High cruise rpm on this boat was top end on the old one. It will take a little getting used to before I max this one out. The 92 mph run was with a 5blade 30"pitch. That was rpm limited, not throttle limited. What a beautiful boat they created. It is amazing at these speeds how well behaved a 22' boat can be. :Score-101010: With the Silent Choice on it is a sleeper leaving the dock. Open the exhaust and you are looking for someting large to come around the corner.

We will see you on the lakes.

Congrats John! Keep us posted on how it runs.

It is cool that Steve ran the boat with you. Gotta respect a high performance boat builder that does that. One of the reasons I love Velocitys is how easy it is to deal with the factory.

He has a lot of experience racing them and building them. That is like having a formula 1 dirver that is also an engineer building a car for you. The whole team is a pleasure to deal with. Kenny and Kim are super people too. They don't just slap a boat together. They understand the physics of design. My partner in this boat has had a lot of offshore boats and raced them. He said this is one of the most fun boats he has ran. It is by far the most fun boat I have run.

They still have my old boat. I thought that boat would have been gone in a week.

Jorge and I will be on the lake this week breaking in the engine and getting more confortable with it.

John

jdcorbitt3 07-01-2010 05:06 AM

The engine is broke in

Well, I have had the boat for about 8 months now. I have about 40 hours on with no issues. I have had it up to 95.8mph on the gps. The boat will run all day long at 90. I sucks down the fuel at those speeds. At 70mph, I am burning 18 gph at about 4000rpm. Punch it and it feels like a drag car. For so many of my friends, this is the fastest they have been on the water. Trimmed in, it rides smoth across 1ft chop at 70. That is 5mph faster than my top speed in the 88. I have even had my wife to 70. She used to freak out at 45 on the old one. This boat still has not seen salt water, but I will remedy that this summer. I am looking foward to running it in south Florida, my old stomping grounds.

John
