Great story.

We did alot of offshore battling with Mike & Gene in P class.

Best of luck with your new toy.

Awesome thread , i look forward to watching the progress of your boat.

This is great news! I was always a fan and almost bought the boat several times when Maddy had it. At that point it was perfect Maddy just couldnt seem to part with it. Once Maddy was gone it appears it lost it's "custodian".

I hope it comes together well.
Good Luck!
Steve

I believe that after Twister, it was left in a yard adjacent to the county landfill near the corner of Sample and Powerline in Pompano Beach, I believe called Crystal Lake Storage. I looked at the boat there in 2006 when I purchased my 26' Corsa, as its trailer was stored in the same yard. At the time, I was dealing directly with the yard, trying to purchase Still Crazy, as there was about a years worth of unpaid storage. The owner was in Indiana or somewhere in the midwest and was going to use the boat as a prop at his restaurant!

handfulz28 10-29-2010 06:54 PM

So glad to see the boat has landed in the right hands. Yep, Crystal Lake Storage - my race car trailer pointed right at Still Crazy and my boat was parked along the same shoreline. I was almost sad to see it gone one day. It sure has passed through a few hands recently.

Really looking forward to following the resto...

I don't have the great story to go with mine, but I too am restoring a older ex-racer Velocity. It can feel like a monumental task for sure at times, but keep plugging at it and you will begin to see the light. Good luck!

Formulabill 10-29-2010 10:37 PM

This is one of the best stories i have read in a long time. A family working on a project like this is just great.

Jordan, Mike , when you get the boat ready, your entry to the Jacksonville Poker Run is on me. Dates are June 9,10 and 11.

Looking foward to meeting both of you and your family.

I am so jealous! The help you are getting is invaluable.
It's a great story. Good luck and thanks for saving another race boat.

Jordan and Mike,

Great story, i was living in South Florida in the late 80's. I remember Still Crazy when Steve was building Velocity's in Pompano Beach. Still Crazy was known as the baddest 30 ever built. I think the bottom pad dynamics were supposed to be a little wider than a normal 30, but that could have just been talk...

Velocity's were being sold at Pompano Sport Boats on Federal Highway in Pompano Beach and I remember Still Crazy in the lot along with "Big Red" the 40 Velocity that won the Worlds in Key West. Had the pleasure of a 100+ mph ride in it way back then. I think Mike that owned PSB still has "Big Red" tucked away somewhere in Florida. Perhaps she may rise one day to run along with "Still Crazy" ...

I've owned Velocity's since 1987, PM me your address, and I'll send you a check for $100.00, every little bit helps... :drink:

Maddy let me measure Still Crazy when it was in the Twister shop. The pad was about 18" longer and the transition to the pad was more gradual. If you look you will see an additional strake low that feeds the pad. We put these changes in my 30 Velocity and it was an improvement. I was told Smokin had the same changes.

This is absolutely the most awesome and touching thread.

StillCrazy J&M 10-30-2010 01:17 PM

Thank you everyone for such kind words and Bruce and Bill for such generous offers. I'm at the Velocity factory with Steve right now working on the boat and will hopefully post some progress pictures when I get home tomorow.

Thank you all again for the support.

Cool Beans Guys . Wish you the best of luck ,can't wait to see you tearing around Naples it.

Steve 1 10-30-2010 01:50 PM

There are some cool pictures of that boat way up and running on the last foot or so of bottom in a speed run back in the 80's, Copeland's event I think.

StillCrazy J&M 10-30-2010 08:14 PM

This is Mike. I wanted to say thanks for all of the thoughtful comments and unbelievable help that people have offered. I know Jordan mentioned this in the post but this honestly is a a dream come true and we both still can not believe it is all happening. I truly look forward to meeting everyone in the future.... or at least wave to you as StillCrazy rips by with the throttles down!! This is the beginning of an amazing journey and I am happy so many people will be part of it. Thanks again.

NJgr8ful 10-30-2010 11:00 PM

Congrats Jordan and Mike and can't wait to see STILL CRAZY ripping it up again! Dreams like this are rare and fun to watch unfold!

Thank you for allowing us to share it with you all!

Best of Luck and Regards,

Well, less progress is visible from this last weekend, but it was progress nonetheless. Mainly removal of every remaining piece of metal on the boat besides the two side and one front lifting eyes.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4092/...78a1f492a9.jpg

Also removed the wood addition to the windscreen, which was rotten. This was an add on and I don't think we're going to put it back.

We're going to be real conservative and replace any areas where we suspect any wood-rot. Right now it looks like the transom, bulkhead between cockpit and engine compartment, cockpit floors and underside of the dash panel.

The plan is also to move the bulkhead at the front of the gas tank compartment forward into the cabin more. This will allow us to put a larger fuel tank back in than the 100 gallon one we took out. When the boat raced, it had a separate front tank.

The glasswork should take a couple weeks and it looks like Mike and I will probably be getting a workout with some sanders this weekend as we take a stab at the first steps of prepping the boat for paint:drink:

I also thought I'd share some of the photos of Still Crazy that Steve had in his office.

Jordan and Mike....don't forget the mileage for the HORBA Sept 24, 2011 Don Aronow Memorial Around Long Island Marathon is 271 miles.....don't be shy with your fuel capacity in that thing........there will be a Historic Class that you can run in.

Guardado 11-02-2010 07:15 PM

yes, we just did the Cougar for Doc B. Which you can see on offshore only. We did a 41 Apache for TNT and Loren Liebel that is a better comparison. You can also find it at our website Guardadomarine.com I think the cougar is not uploaded yet.
Anything we can do to help on the Velocity will be my pleasure. We are restoring a 78 cigarette right now. You boys can use my shop and spraybooth free of charge.

StillCrazy J&M 11-02-2010 08:15 PM

Eddie, thank you so much for offering that! We're going to meet Chris at Velocity this weekend and hopefully get a gameplan together for the paint and start on the prep work if possible. We'll certainly let you know as soon as we have more details of what we need to do.

Everyone has just been amazingly supportive since I put this post up. Thanks again to everyone that is following or that has offered assistance along the way. Hopefully our hard work and the help from the talented individuals that are helping us will result in a finished product that everyone can appreciate.

Steve will know a way to sneak some extra gallons in there and still keep the boat balanced.

We will also have next November 2011, the Fort Lauderdale to Key West run.... that will be just over 210 miles.

Great Story and Great Thread Guys !!!! Good luck with your project and keep us posted (pics) on your progress........

Really cool boat, story, & project!

I think the boat looks badass in it's original paint design, so I hope you guys are planning to keep it the same when you do the repaint. It's going to look incredible when you finish it, especially with all of the top notch help you guys are getting!

A friend of mine & I used to run a really cool single engine Velocity "Thouroughbred" around on Grand Lake back in the early 1990's. It had a 500 Bulldog in it, and would haul ass! We had so much fun in that boat. I can't imagine what that thing would have ran like with twins in it. http://smiliesftw.com/x/cooleek.gif

Absolute best of luck with the project & have a great time! Keep us up to speed with pictures as you make progress! :ernaehrung004:
