Tabs are nice to have but I ran without any for all the years I had the boat. I would strongly suggested adding on hydraulic steering. It makes it safer and better handeling.

Cool thats what i was wondering. I knew to get steering first. I want to put a supercharger on there right away but i will do the steering first.looking at dealers sites now.

With a supercharger, upgraded steering is a must. I had the Imco steering put on mine and was happy with it. The Marina that did the install said it was a good easy install. If you need help, get in touch with Kenny at Let'sTalk Boats.

I had a 1991 Thouroughbred (280 Velocity) as my first performance boat. I really enjoyed it and I hope you will also. They are a drivers boat and faster than most in it's size. Enjoy!

Congrats. I sold mine a year ago and keep asking myself why. Owned a 96 280 with a 600hp 515bbc. If you drive it smart and smooth the drive will hold up OK. Only broke one. This group has the best knowledge base of any page. There's 280 owners here with everything from 330 to 1100 hp. All you questions will get answered. I owned a Velocity for over 15 years it's a great family I'm not leaving even though I'm just watching for now. You have to check out " 41 upgrades" what a build.

As vicious22 said, there's a ton of Velocity 280 expertise and experience here, and while there will always be more than one opinion, you can count on people wanting to help out. Congrats, enjoy the boat and heed the advice of the guys that have been where you are before and you'll get a great set-up boat. |

Looks good! Please tell me you are changing the name. That has been so overused, IMO.
|
That is the first thing I am going to do. Way to cliché foe me.try to think of a name for it now. I am also covering the striping with a carbon fiber look and will eventually redo the vinyl with a cardon silver and blue theme.

just asking did it come with a trailer ? Also if your engine is a OEM Mercruiser 502 MPI - you must have the last ones built from Mercruiser because the 496 / 8.1 started going into boats model year 2001 and I think that started in Nov 2000. The 454 and 502 were no more from 2001 on. Of course if some builders had leftovers they were used in which could have been the case for yours. I am not saying this in a bad way because I would rather have the 502 than the 496.
How many hours does your 280 have ? Is it a saltwater boat or anytime in the salt ? I am asking because I want to see realistically what possible price I could get out of mine as I have a 2000 280 454 HO MAG all freshwater, trailer, very low hours. If I could ask and not being to personal here can you list a price range as to what the selling price was. I AM NOT asking you to throw out what you paid but possible a price range of what was being asked. Thank you and good luck with your new boat. I like it and it looks great. |
It is the original motor from the factory it has 338 hrs.it is a saltwater boat but you cant tell it was really takecare of there a little seperstion from the powder coating and the bolster bases and a little on the trim ring of the throttles. It came with a nice aluminum trailer and has a 2000 watt stereo systemas well as emi thunder exhaust and k&n air filter.the boat is super clean with all the maint records from new. I paid between 20 and 25 for it.

Hey Ryan, how is that bad boy running? You should come up and run it in the Buffalo Poker Run! It is a good run and well organized. Plus there was only three Velocitys.

Yea i looked at those i deff want to do thay.thanks

You cant go wrong with a 280 Velocity. Had one for 11 years and loved it, it was just time to go bigger for the big water.
|
Thats great news. I got the boat right before i had to go back to work. So i will be taking it out for the first time the first of april.
|
Driving a Velocity, especially the 280 is a little different than a standard V hull. I found out the hard way, it likes speed, my first trip out was in 2' to 3' waves. I was going slow and we were pounded, my wife almost made me sell it. I took it out later and hammered it, and low and behold about 55mph it smoothed out like nothing was there. My optimal cruising speed now is from 55 to 70mph, that will smooth out any inland lake. It's a good thing it only takes about 4 seconds to hit 55mph.
