I put the VR 1 in just before Memorial day weekend. Didn't get a chance to thourghly clean and wax as my Yukon had to go into the body shop. Poor baby sat on the lift, dirty and dull.

I pulled it out yesterday, washed, clayed, polishef and waxed it today. I am tired but happy. Will fill the gas tank and put it back im.

How is it running??

Could you remove the rev limiter via software, just for purposes of the test? That would be one way to post a bigger number, if the engine has the HP to push it.

Yes, the rev limiter can be raised if you can program the Merc PCM555. Whipple Superchargers and a few others can do this. No help revving a stock 496HO anywhere over 5150 rev limit. Power falls off big/fast after. Not to mention possible valve float as valvesprings are very weak.

do not even bother to go over 5100 with a stock 496 HO - there is nothing there on those stock apps. Stay off the rev limiter as well. Only a couple can raise the rev limiter on a recal for PCM 555 but after the first 500 HO 496s were made even the crank is not forged just to bring that up on top of. Not any forged internals in a 496.

basically for the recals on PCM 555 most that say they can really are sending them in to the very few that can. I am looking into recaling as we speak to do it myself as well.

Interesting. I wasn't suggesting raising the rev limiter for anyone, except as a possible explanation as to how they hit 75 @5400 with a stock 496 HO in the video.

So this chart showing forged crank and rods on the HO is incorrect?

Some early 2001-2002 496 HO's had the forged crankshaft until GM Powertrain - GM quit using them in lieu of GM's own new pressure rolled fillet nodular iron special 496 crank (bean counter decsion). Its nothing like an earlier GM cast iron crankshaft, much better part and nitirided too.
The forged units are a bit stronger and lighter than the cast crankshafts but both are very capable of handling 600-700HP without failures.

496 connecting rods, they are forged rods, early ones with pressed pins the later ones with full floating pins. These rods are metric length in stroke (6.683") and will not interchange with 454-502 sizes because they also have a metric diameter pin (actually measures about 1.043") which is larger than the standard BBC .990" size pin. The metric 10mm dia. rod bolts are not as strong as good ARP 7/16" rod bolts.
