Just bought a Vr1 any advice?

Just bought my neighbors 2002 Vr1 with 33 original hrs! First boat but I build/modify everything planning to order a procharger in the next 2 weeks. Bone stock 500efi with xr drive, it was run every year in the driveway and rewinterized. I believe it was only in the water 1-2 seasons always a day boat trailered home and garaged the first time it even saw rain was 2 days ago when I bought it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Padraig 07-18-2018 07:31 AM

First, welcome to the Velocity family. They are fantastic boats.

If this is your first boat I would hold off the performance mods and use your first season to learn how to run a performance boat. Also, while I am not an engine guru it is my understanding that a proc harder is not just a simple bolt on operation. I am sure others will offer more info on Supercharging.

Any specific questions you may have, feel free to ask. There are a few VR 1 owners here and a bunch of current and past Velocity owners.

Have fun and be safe.

That's a nice find! Congrats! Awesome package for your first boat. Sounds like new with those hours.
Get some seat time and you might not need the Procharger right away. While low hours on the 500efi, it's still 16 yrs old. Make sure everything is running correctly. Change all filters, oil etc...
What prop did it come with?

4x4builder 07-18-2018 08:22 AM

Thanks guys, it was a good find but unfortunate the owner ran it some but then his wife got sick and it was no longer a priority although he was a great mechanic and took good care of it annually. It looks absolutely brand new I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the lowest hr 2002 vr1 hull around. Only issue was squirrels chewed the cover when it was on his deck drying out. Came with 2 labbed bravo 1 props 1 for light high speed run and one for loaded/tubing I don’t remember diameter/pitch I’ll put that up after I take a look.

4x4builder 07-18-2018 08:24 AM

Bellows is original that will be changed right away along with a good overall service

4x4builder 07-18-2018 08:29 AM

Have an issue with the gps speedo not working I believe I can just get a new antenna from what the owner was saying.

Tried to post pics ill do a few posts to get them up

Welcome. Be very interested to see the pictures of your VR-1. Absolutely heed Padraig's and Ryan's advice on getting seat time skill for a good year first before considering a power upgrade. See how you typically use your boat and then decide if the expense and other trade-offs of supercharging makes sense for you. Where do you plan to run it? I know first hand that the sea conditions at the NJ shore will very rarely allow for fully trimmed speed blasts for your boat (or even my 390!) as currently powered. I run my 280 (predecessor of your hull) on the Delaware River which is smoother until the boat traffic builds it up. It's uncommon for me to "want" to go full bore on the weekends - even with my long k-planes and stand-up bolsters. Best of luck and enjoy your new boat and the reliability of the 500EFI/XR combination.

4x4builder 07-18-2018 10:23 AM

Hey thanks, after running her in the mullica river I’m good with the speed I’m holding off. 40-50 is plenty running wot was a little nerve racking and I’m used to fast stuff.

4x4builder 07-18-2018 10:30 AM

I plan on running in the Delaware and my parents are at great oak in Maryland so the Chesapeake as well. Most of my friends have more family oriented boats running slower then mine.

Barn find VR-1, and as a 1st boat...life is good for you ! :)

Hold off on power upgrade for a while....it will take some time to learn how to drive that boat anyway...and not all owners of them get the hang of running on the pad,,even after some years go by.

Congrats on the purchase !

4x4builder 07-18-2018 11:05 AM

Thanks! I got really lucky even with the price 30k. But negotiated that with buying his house as well for the garage. I don’t have the ability to build a garage on my property as the original was converted to more living space and out back is pool/septic field. Most likely rent the house out. I’ll get more pics up soon of whole boat.

F-2 Speedy 07-18-2018 11:14 AM

Damn.............did you get his old lady too............some of us have driven thousands of miles to get our boats, you find one next door.....:picard1:

4x4builder 07-18-2018 11:26 AM

Lol he’s got a house in Florida and couldn’t wait to move permanently, I’m always so busy I never really talked to him too much I probably could have bought it years ago. I normally don’t have good luck so this was crazy that it’s all working out. Found another pic my kid helping get in the https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...5e0cc84e2.jpeg

Great looking VR 1. Do you know if it came from the factory with those graphics?
Again, big Congrats.

Padraig

4x4builder 07-18-2018 11:54 AM

It did! He ordered it with his own drawings for the graphics which came with the boat. Got every piece of paper receipt manuals and the velocity bag. I’m more of a stock Outerlimits graphics fan but it grew on me. I was actually waiting on a callback or email from Outerlimits on a possible sv29 build when this came up. Saved me just a little bit lol

CJSYD 07-18-2018 03:44 PM

Wow... love the looks of that and congrats! Like others have said, get some seat time then decide on the upgrade. I'd love to get my 290 into the 90's like my previous boat but conditions down here in Tampa wouldn't allow that very often. You'll figure out what's needed and adjust accordingly... enjoy!!!

Livorsi or Gaffrig? My 06 Livorsi speedo was the same. I did away with the gps antenna/battery. I wired the speedo off the NEMA output of my Garmin chartplotter. Works great!

4x4builder 07-18-2018 06:30 PM

Livorsi and I would have never thought of that thanks man much appreciated

Very nice looking boat. I launch my 280 at the Neshaminy State Marina on the PA side which is just south of Bristol. Very nice, 4 wide launch ramp there that's well protected from river wakes. Take your time getting comfortable with how the boat handles the conditions, trimming and tabbing as needed to keep things smooth. Some years back I had the distinct pleasure of Steve Stepp throttling my 390 at Velocity Fest on a bumpy Chesapeake Bay and smoother is generally faster! So throttle up incrementally based on how the boat feels to you. Check out NJPPC.COM as there are a few fun runs that may interest you scheduled near the Mullica.

Beautiful boat!!!
Being a 280 owner for the last 6 years I would recommend you keep it stock and enjoy the many hours of no headaches. Also don't waste your money on labbed props. It's not worth the expense as most don't work well.

Good Luck!!!

Padraig 07-19-2018 11:54 AM

4 x 4, as you said this is your first boat, I have to ask, are you familiar with trimming a performance boat? Please don’t be offended as that is not my intent.
Trimming for efficiency, top speed, and comfort is an important skill.

4x4builder 07-19-2018 01:45 PM

Previous owner gave me a good rundown when we went out the other day. My previous experience was with an auto trimming boat that had Volvo ips with joystick so I’m new to it.

I think I’ll be dry stacking at dredge harbor to avoid trailering I know a few people that used to and they said it was nice calling ahead and having the boat by the gas dock when you get there. Those fun runs are on my list once I know what I’m doing. Maybe we can meet up once I’m not such a noob so I don’t slow anyone down.

Great, you already know more then most. Remember, make small changes and see what happens.
mark on your indicators numeral position of both the drive and the tabs. By numeral I mean the drive and tabsare parallel with the hull. I used a small strip of blue painters tape but whatever works for you. The neutral position gives you a staring position after you are on plane.

The guy put stickers that say level on already! He was really helpful kind of like you guys thanks again everybody. Should be able to post some pics tomorrow if my day isn’t too crazy. Luckily I’m able to keep it in his garage until it’s my garage.

Leaving for Seneca Lake tomorrow morning. It is the battleship Run.

Have fun this weekend.

Beautiful VR-1! My first performance boat was a 280 with twin 260s'. It was a handful to say the least with the outboards and a pad. What a great find. Enjoy!

Hey have a good time out there! Great looking boats guys I’ve seen pics of both when I was looking to see what other people have done to them. Should be getting out with a friend Sunday but I’m cleaning it up today hopefully

Dredge Harbor is well run and rack storage is a nice option. I store my 280 on the trailer at the marina - like the flexibility to hook up and go! Be happy to meet up with you sometime on the Delaware and go at your pace. It's generally nicer heading north and there are new floating public docks in Bristol to pull up and go to lunch etc.
