290 sc
hi guys. just got a velocity 290 sc. has factory prop on it 28 pitch. 496 mag ho. still learning to drive it but cant get the max rpms past 4700. anyone out there with some suggestions? lower pitch maybe? thanks for any input.
|
What mph are you seeing?
|
About 60 max.
|
I don't have a 290 sc but I have had a 280 and now a VR 1. That being said I think you have too much pitch for a 496 may go. On my 280 with a 502 mag HO I ran a labbed 27 hydromotive quad four at about 5100 rpm and 72mph. It can with a stock 25 hydromotive and was a tad slower. The 290 sc is a bit more bow heavy then a 280 so I wouldn't think it could swing a 28 pitch unless it was modified.
What brand and modelprop to you have? Padraig |
Also the rpm and mph don't add up. With a 28 prop you should be low 4000's rpm at 60 mph. A 28 at 4600rpm should be around 70mph.
Are you over trimming the drive? |
Good point.....I didn't do the math.
Elwood, don't take this personally but need to know how experienced you are in running and trimming a boat? Is the engine stock? Is the speed you quoted from a GPS? Do you have trim tabs? Padraig PS. Velocity are great boats..... we'll figure it out. |
Thanks . It's a bravo 4 blade.

Test report, not sure what it's worth.

I remember the conversation I had with Kenny after i bought my 280. He said the prop should be a 27 (between a bravo 26 & 28). I don't hit the limiter on my stock 26 Bravo. Will run 68 just about any day with a lot of fuel and passengers. Best I seen was 74 with the stars all lined up. I sent Velocity my Mercury labbed 28 bravo one for them to tweak. What a waste of money. Now I'm running a stock 26 bravo one and couldn't be happier. Personally I'm not chasing the last mph. Just looking for good all around prop.

Thank you padraig!!! Maybe my speedo is off. All numbers seem about right
|
Planes off with the bravo 26 nicely ?

What part of the country are you located? There might be a fellow Velocity owner nearby. Padraig |
The Bravo props are really 1 pitch smaller than stamped. The 28p Bravo measures 14.75" dia vs 15.25" as advertised. The larger pitch's are more true to size. That's the correct prop for his boat.
Prop/hull condition? Boat load? All play a big factor in getting top speed and rpms. As said get some gps speed numbers. What are you trimmed at? |
i do have a spare propeller. its a 28 4 blade but the blades are sharper. would that make that big of a difference? hull is in great shape and usually have 4 on board with half tank of gas. was running against my old boat and a friends 272 baja both with 502s. werent pulling on my. ill look more closely at tach and speedo today. thanks again gents!!

What rpms are you running at ? if the engine will not reach 5000 rpms I would scan the engine and see if the engine is producing 100 available power and I would check fuel pressure before spending money on new props.. 496 suffer from many sensor issue - fuel side and fuel pressure issues all the time. And even PCM issues. Believe I know.
Also just some side info for whomever - the 496 actually can run decent on 7 cyc - the idle will be somewhat rough but off idle it does not seem too bad for running - a lack of full range rpms will missing thou. |
Ok. I'll check my rpms and speed this week. Thanks again.
|
I have a 290SC (enclosed head) with a stock 496MagHO and with the Stock (non-"velocity") Merc Bravo1 28p I got it to 67 at ~4600 to 4700 rpm (65 gallons of fuel, gear and 2 adults). I sent the Bravo1 to Scott at Velocity, had it labbed and now it does 71 mph at ~4900 rpm down wind and 70 mph up wind (60 gallons of fuel, gear, 2 adults and a child) and it had more I could've squeezed out of it. With the original labbed velocity prop (a Bravo1 28p labeled Velocity-1) that came with the boat, Scott also labbed it, however, I haven't had the opportunity to really test it.
|
hey thanks. that sounds about right where im running at also. would you have any contact info to get ahold of scotty? thanks for the help.

Ok. Thank you
|
Past monday i saw just over 70mph on my 06 496ho 290sc with the Bravo 1 prop 28p labbed to a 27p. Not totally sure what my rpms were.
|
hey thanks. i talked to scott at velocity and he is sending me a bravo 4blade 26 pitch to try out. so well see.......thanks again!!!

ok gang.i finally got a chance to run the boat full out so heres the info.....2 people gear and 3 quarter tank of gas. with the 4 blade bravo 28 pitch at full throttle with no trim i was at 4000 rpms and about 48 mph. with trim up and a 3 footish rooster tail i was maxed out at 4500 rpms and a little less than 55 mph.. scotty at velocity is sending me a labbed 4 blade bravo with a 26 pitch. even if my speedo is off we couldnt get it above 4500. any input is appriciated thank you
|
Something isn't right, I am spinning a 28p bravo 4 blade labbed to 27p 4900rpm, running right around 70mph, no problem with minimum trimming 2006 290sc with 496 mag HO. I am far from a professional, but I'm thinking you might want to get an ECU scan to see if anything is going on with your engine.

Does it feel like 55? If not, either use your phone or get a small handlheld GPS. Also, how much trim are you giving the boat? Does it have a trim indicator? 3ft of a tail is not an abundant amount of trim, so that could be the RPM issue. Also, does the boat have tabs? Where are they set? If you have indicators for both, while the boat is on the trailer, have someone adjust both the drive and the tabs to where they are parallel to the bottom of the boat, and note that point on the indicators. The tabs should be no lower than that point when running for top end. The drive should be at least that high, and will end up being higher the more comfortable you become with driving the boat. Good luck! |

did ya get that 290SC from Kenny H? |
If you have a Gen III fuel system, then change your fuel filters.

I think your speedo is off. Does it have a pitot tube or is it pulling off the drive? If that speed is correct, that puts the slip around 30% which is way off for a Velocity.

Elwood, did you get out last weekend? If so, what were the results?
Padraig |
hi gents. still waiting on new prop had an issue with mercury i guess. talked to mechanic and he says there are no motor issues. but, does agree that rpms are way low for that boat and suggested either a 4 blade 26 pitch or going to a 3 blade wich im not going to do. just waiting on new one. scotty at velocity said i dont have enough hp to be spinning a 28. so, well see. love the boat tho. they are nice to drive when ya get used to it....
|
hi gang. got new prop from scotty. 4 blade 26 pitch bravo. incredible paneing difference and just overall better driving boat with it. he thinks my speedo is broke. i can get it just over 5000 rpm with 3 qtr tank and 3 adults on it but only registering 57 on the top end. my app on my phone read the same. although, at one point after trimming it down a bit i rea;;y felt the thing grab so im going to give it another whirl this week. had to slow down due to a no wake zone.
|
My 2006 290sc with 496 ho spins a 28p bravo1 labbed to 27p from the factory, slightly slow to get on plane but some tabs will help with that, and even as is it's not that bad. I know that speed isn't gps, but I would think it's right around 70ish
|
|
hmmm. i wish. i talked to scotty and he said to replace the spark pplugs. so...
|
Scott Mccormick is great, he really knows his stuff and he is bringing the brand back, which I think is amazing. I'm super suprised he sent you a 26p prop. Maybe see if you can find someone locally with a bravo1 28p that will let you try it. I know this gen 496 has issues with paint in the cool fuel module causing injectors to clog. I'm going to pull my injectors this spring and get then checked and cleaned, do you have transom soot??
|
scott couldnt be better. he rocks ill see what happens after plugs are done...
