I judst payed $900 for one with a blown lower , if that means anything to you.
I'd grab it. I have seen them sell for $2500.
Real problem is, they rarely go up for sale anymore. Some years back 2/3/4 would go up within the forums per year....now 0/1/2.
BTW: A few 185 owners over at BF's with SS's. One runs high 80's with a small block.

Holy smokes! Thats very promising than... My dad just built a 383 with 455hp and 468tq that we are putting in the xlt. She should surely fly.
I will have to check out BF's. Been looking for a forum with people that own xlts...
Thanks for the tip

He was well into the 70's with a 383. A few other non Powerplays well into 70's also with 383's and SS's.
A lot of people have gained 5-7mph with an SS and no other change....other than prop for the change of course.
Again, the SS is a hot item with the smaller performance boat crowd.

I picked up my SS in near mint shape off Ebay for $1500 in 08'. Tore it apart and verified all clearances and specs, added new seals, pressure tested. I reshimmed the upper and lower gears a tad tighter than Merc stock spec and have been pounding on it since every year. Adding the SS to my Challenger brought my propshaft centerline to 3.5" below the pad bottom. Gained 5 mph and 500 rpms with no prop change. Had to go to a 4 blade QIV labbed prop and ended up with 6.5 mph total gain with the drive. Best of 80.5 GPS with the 383.
Like stated they are getting pretty rare and hard to find in useable running condition. My advice if you indeed find one is to have it broken down and clearances and specs verified and seals replaced. At least pressure test the drive to verify the seals are ok. Last thing you want to do is grenade the drive as certain parts are as rare as the drive itself.

As mentioned above, I had an Alpha SS but sold it last year. A buddy of mine has 2 of them (were on a 24 Donzi Spitfire w/320EFI's) If you are still looking, reply and I'll ask him if he wants to part with them.
