Phoenix is your best bet for work but hotter than frigging blazes in the summer. My folks live just north of Scottsdale (Carefree) and for a desert town, it's not bad.

Powell has no work as there is really no cities there.

There are a lot of places to stay in Havasu so shouldn't be a problem. You'll get sick of having to haul your boat out every day though. If you stay at the nautical you can beach your boat. London bridge Resort has a few slips and that is where I always stay. Really no other place to leave the boat in the water overnight.

If you stay in Vegas you can find plenty of places and also do some boating on Mead. You could also stay in Laughlin for cheap and it's on the River so your VIP will be a good boat to run down to Havasu. We usually stay at the AVI which is an Indian casino a few miles south of town. They have their own launch ramp. You can launch there and run all the way down river past Topac to the sand bar (a must see) and to Havasu (Be very careful if you go early in the morning as the water level will be low and you can whack your drives...ask me how i know!) Once you're on the lake you have to cruise the channel and Copper Canyon. Havasu Springs is nice run too. If you get there before DS you can get familiar with the area.

From the bridge, in the channel, do you go northwest then make a right when you enter the lake to go to the sandbar and Havasu? Heck, I thought lake Havasu city was "Havasu". Is there some little town on the river upstream called Havasu?

Actually Phx is a little over 3 hours south of Havasu. Summer is around 110-120, yeah it's hot, but we love it.

Not quite sure what you mean, there is Havasu Landing (Indian casino there) across the Lake from Lake Havasu City and Havasu Springs at the south end of the Lake. Lot of people just say Havasu instead of Lake Havasu City.

Oh, didn't know it was that far - never drove it. Thanks! I almost bought a house in Phoenix - Goodyear/Avondale. 2 yrs ago could get 1800 sq ft home 5 yrs old with built in pool for $65-$70K. Great place to spend a winter...!

I've been to Havasu once before and stayed in main lake area. I was recently informed that there is a lot up stream such as popular sandbar and marinas plus very scenic areas. Small towns on river??? I had no idea there was anything across lake either. Well, I've got a whole week to explore this April.

Soembody mentioned So Cal... I lived in san diego for 20+ years...had a lot of friends that lived there too..not anymore. When I moved to the midwest I got a 75% pay raise doing the same job for the same company. And the cost of living in so cal... If you arent bringing down over 100k your below the realistic poverty line. Hell a friend of mine sold a freaking double wide in San Diego for $400,000 its that bad......

If there 's plenty of snow melt and water is up you can make it to Laughlin for some casino fun.

But you need to be very careful above the Needles bridge, a lot of submerged boulders. It depends on how water is being let out of Mohave Res. and when.

Up the river you got the sandbar, about 5 miles up, then Topock Gorge which is a "no wake" and then there is Pirates Cove which is about 20 miles up from the mouth of the river. They are in the process of rebuilding Topock Marina which is just before Pirates Cove on the AZ. side just after the I-40 bridge. Then after all that is Needles, CA. with Avi Casino above that then on to Laughlin. That is kinda a summary of whats up river.
