Stock 271 Prop???
Friends just bought a mint 2000 271, 502 Mag EFI, 26 pitch 4 blade Bravo. Boats runs nicely once on plane, tops out at about 65. Problem is,,,,, getting the thing on plane. Prop blows out badly, no hook up whatsoever.
Is this the wrong prop for this boat? Flat out RPMs are right where they should be (5100).

Re: Stock 271 Prop???
Formula has used the B1 4-blade for years,26 seems best, but the issues you bring up are common. I had intended to try a 5 blade Maximas on the 271 I just got in,but I sold the boat.Have another one on order. I promised myself I will try a Maximas when it comes in because as great as the 271 is,it does need some help in the acceleration department.A Maximas might be the ticket, but we want know till we try.I'll keep the board posted.

Re: Stock 271 Prop???
Just a thought........
I know they are comming with a 1:65 ratio in the drive which explains the larger pitch prop. Would 1:50 ratio with a smaller prop plane better??? maybe the smaller pitch prop will spin more freely to help ??

Don't know about that combo but, I do know its not an issue with spinning the prop up. That 502 is litterally blowing the prop right out, you can feel it cavitate like crazy. So, I don't think it needs a smaller prop, feels to me like it needs a bigger prop. Not necessarily more pitch, more diameter. But then again, I'm certainly no prop wizard.

Re: Stock 271 Prop???
I had the same issue with my 1999 271. It came with a 4 blade 26P LH prop. I played around with different props for two years. I had a 5 blade Hydro P5 that launched the boat on plane but overall, I found the good old Bravi 1 4 blade to be the best all around prop for the 271.
Check this link out. It is a helpful tip from an OSO member on this forum. It describes how to rotate a nylon spacer in the rear of the drive to allow the drive to trim in and extra inch or so. It made a noticable difference in planing time. It tends to bow steer a bit with the drive fully in so be prepared to trim out a little once on plane.
Also, I found that trim tabs are a must.
