OT: Gas mileage with Ford Powerstroke??

I may go test drive an 02 F-350 dually crew cab w/Pwr Stroke and 6speed manual tomorrow. I really like my V-10 dually but gas mileage is not great. I get 8-10 city and 13-14 highway and this is not towing anything.

Can you guys with PwrStroke duallys post some gas mileage figures? This truck is bit more $$ than the V-10 was so I want to see if the extra gas mileage is worth it.

Thanks for any help!!

Eric

Check- I've got a 2000 SRD CC AUTO 4BY. Average 13-14 to work everyday and 17-19 highway. Keep it under 2K RPM. I read somewhere where it takes 60K miles to offset the $4K upper. Won't go back to gas again:D My 98 Expy w/5.4L couldn't get those numbers.

Have heard the same 60,000 mile return however that was when diesel was cheaper than gas, not the case today. Have also heard from the lease companies that you buy diesel for the power not the fuel mileage.

Ive got a cc 4x4 dually and I get 18 if I keep it at 65 or less. If I run 75 to 80 I get about 14 non towing. Around town I get 15 to 16. Towing I get around 12 running 70mph towing around 9000lbs.

Before I had the tranny problems that have yet to be fixed I got about 16-17 average over a tank and I would get about 13 Towing!!!!

Now I get about the same with nothing but only about 9mpg with out a load

I have a 99PSD crew cab lariat with DRW.

F350 Crew Cab Dually 4X4, 4:10 limited slip front and rear. I get 16-17 on highway at 70mph. I get around 10 towing the AT 37 AVH (12,000-13,000 lbs on trailer) at 65-70 mph. I would get 11 towing the 290 PQ (9500 lbs on trailer) at 65-70mph. Loose about 2 mph if all in town driving.

I am told with a chip I can up to 2 mph on the highway mileage.

Just my opinion, if fuel mileage is what your concerned with I would keep the V-10. The diesel will cost about 4 - 5 thousand more to purchase, oil changes are $79.95 compared to $21.95 for the gas motor, fuel filters are recommended every 10,000 miles and cost $60.00 installed, air filters are also more expensive and are needed more frequently, and heaven forbid if anything major was to go wrong, fuel injectors, glow plugs, injection pump, ect. Parts and labor for diesel repairs are a lot more expensive than gas engines! Any money saved at the fuel pump will be more than offset by initial purchase price, maint. & repairs. Now if you were thinking about buying a diesel for more towing power, thats a different story.

Great info! Thanks a lot!

Does a diesel tow that much better than a V-10 gas? I've never towed with a diesel.
