The oil drain kit allows you to drain the filter and lines before removing the filter. The Oil Drainer clamps over the center of the oil filter. A hardened steel rod pierces the filter can and allows the oil to be neatly drained into your catch bucket. Can be hooked to a suction unit as well.

Much less mess.

It's just a horrible messy job no matter how you do it.

Default thanks for the tips

Thank you to everyone for all the tips. I'll be sure to use filters with-out the check valve and do the punch a hole trick, along with the milk jug, loosen a turn and wait a bit, have a bunch of rags ready and plan to clean the bilge after anyway.

Not sure you would want to use non-anitsyphon filters. It's meant to ensure there are no dry starts.

For the verticals, I simply as others said, pop a few holes on top with a hand rag around it's base just in case, let it sit while attending to something else, then screw it off no mess, no fuss each and every time.

I was always curious ... What possible reason is there for mounting a filter upside down or horizontal???

But that method also works great with filters with the antidrainback valve. I have never spilt any oil when removing oil filters with the antidrainback valve. I would not recommend using oil filters without an antidrainback valve unless you have an external preluber pump to fill the oil filter before the start. I do have preluber pumps, but I also use filters with the antidrainback valve to be on safe side.

mine are also horizonal and what i do is losen them up then slip a heavy zip lock baggie over them and screw of and let it fall into the zip lock and i hardly get any mess.

This sounds like a pain in the arse, but is really quicker than all above and NO mess. My filter assembly is held on w/ 2 bolts.
1st - I loosen filter so I can spin it off by hand w/o breaking seal.
2nd - I remove entire filter mount assembly by removing 2 bolts.
3ed - I move assembly over small waste basket w/ plastic liner and unscrew filter. Filter drops into waste basket and I also get to drain old oil from the assembly.
4th - Wipe out assembly w/ towel, remount, and spin on new filter.
Nothing has spilled, all oil drained, didn't have to wait f/ filter to drain - super easy and fast.

This only works if you remote oil filter mount has flexible lines f/ mount to motor. Most Mercruisers do.
