We built a 454 small block for my buddies 55 chevy. so you can get the cubes you need from a nice aftermarket block and stroker set up and still have the room and lower weight.
Ran in the mid nines but that was on race gas N/A with a killer set of heads and a HUGE roller cam.
you could Turbocharge or pro charge a set of SBC with big cubes and have the best of both worlds pretty easily

the white 31' GA has 454's..believe the blue 30' is/was a small block boat..
Bumping an old thread. So, does Great Adventure have small-blocks? If so, how many HP and how fast is it? Big blocks are a tight fit in the 30' OPs. How much power would you need to get one to run 80+ with TRS drives? Would you pick up much speed with a Bravo conversion?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Would there be much of an advantage from a performance standpoint? Clearly, you can pick up big block-based engines pretty cheaply since they've been the standard marine engine for a long time. I like the idea of small blocks from a usability standpoint, but it all comes down to dollars and cents in the end...

Great thread. its cheaper to get Hp out of a BBC then SBC. i am doing it now and it gets pricey. Just, i like the balance of the SBCs the boat just flys right and true. Something about a SBC boat going by a BBC boat like it was tied to a buulkhead

Toasty, is 500hp from a sbc that hard?
If you needed 2x600hp+ in a 30ft boat... you gotta think $ ain't an issue. Fast, Cheap, Reliable... pick 2.
Twin 450-500s in a 28-30 should get you moving pretty darn well.
I was quoted a few yrs back from a respected builder in Miami area $12-13k for 475hp/475tq closed cooled fully dressed w/ stainless marine exhaust.

Well, James Gang on S&F has a 31' with triple outboards that does 96. I agree that an SBC boat would be much easier to work on and better balanced. It just seems that there are many more BBC take outs and the like. Does anyone have a sense of how much faster a SB Ocean Pacer would be than a BB Ocean Pacer assuming both engines put out the same HP?
Hmm, twin 475 hp small-blocks. I wonder how fast an OP set up with them would be?

500 hp isnt that hard, with todays heads its more easier then previous years. An honest 500 can be made out of a SBC. But everyones dyno is different.
a 475 hp SBC depending on drive hight and set up i.e. props and all i would hope a Sutphen 30 would do mid 80s.
my numbers came out to 83.
It would be great to just throw $$ at it and make close to 600 with jesel valve train, belt drive, alum heads that flow great, and major ci to get the boat pounding, and reliable exh like stainless marine. I understand SM ex flows well and is more reliable then CMI although they do look sexy, i would rather be on the water all the time then fixing cracked welds of CMI (for 3-4 hp its not worth it)
If someone is building over 500 hp i would really like to hear about it.
best of luck,,,i will show my progress shortly. i am only 388 inches and hope to be making 500-515hp with the combinations i have. started with old blocks dart heads and eagle rotating assy. we will see

I am suprised no one has switched over to an LS1 based engine program in one of these.
inexpensive 6.0 liter truck engines and the cylinder head technology is so much farther ahead of whats out ther for BBC or SBC its rediculous. I think they flow like 270 CFM out of the box, have great swirl tech and are a fast burn head. plus they are alreay set up for EFI.
So drop on a Accel Gen 7 DFi or a big stuff and mow you have total tunability at the touch of your laptop.
