the thunder 32 is built off an excalibur. I think this was # 1. now in arizona

I remember back in 2001 when I was looking to purchase the 1990 32' A/T (that I now own) with some little 454cid, problem laddened naturaly aspirated engines that needed repair or total rebuild. There was a also a 1991 33' Powerplay with BIG 556cid supercharged engines for sale that was WATER READY for the same price in the same town, but when I compared the "free board" and the engine compartment room/space, and how the back seat opened up the engine compartment nicely. I new if I ever had engine problems or had to get to something in that Powerplay a person would have to be the size of an elf to get to anything or just be able to pull any kind of routine maintenance! Actually, there are many other boats with the same kind of set-up as the Powerplay. I have seen people work on that boat before and they practically had to be double jointed and be able to stand on their head to get to anything............ha, there was no comparison and it made it a no brainer for me and I bought that AT!!!
I originally thought the new 33's (Active Thunder)extra cockpit room came stricktly from the extra 1 foot that was added to the hull design, but I later found out that some of the engine compartment room of the new 33' had been compromised. The new 33' has a little larger of a cockpit area which is always nice, but it looks as if it came at the expense of shortening up the engine compartment that I greatly appreciated with the attribute of a larger engine compartment the old 32' had! It's a matter of personal preference, but I always thought the old 32's cockpit room was adequate enough for the size of the boat. If there needs to be work done in the engine compartment I appreciate a little "elbow room" so things aren't too frustrating to get to. I always thought this was one of AT's great attribute of their boats vs many other manufactures. Well, at least they still have the great free board and back seat that exposes the engine nicely. For now I guess I'll hang on to my old 32'. :D |

The 33' has plenty of elbow room because the rear of the back seat is part of the engine hatch. Rather then coming in from only the top as in the case of many others out there, the A/T has plenty of room... Plus it's Pat built.. Why would you have to get in there in the first place?. :D

the dash and hatch access were the original thunder design.

The 33 was designed with an identical cockpit to the 37, on purpose. Some of the length was taken from the cabin, and some from the engine compartment. (Remember, the 37 has seen triples and staggered setups before.)
We can still adjust the cockpit as needed though. If you want the cockpit shortened up a bit like we did on Color of Money with 3 electric stand-up bolsters across the backseat; we can do that on the 33 as well. AT is a custom builder. Just ask. |
