25' thunder

Hi guys,

I am considering buying a 1996 25' active thunder with a stock 454 mag (350HP). Just wondering if anyone has any info on how these boat run in the rough. Also what kind of top speed I might be looking at.

camptappakeg69 07-29-2011 04:29 PM

my 97 is great in the rough for a 24.5' boat, best i've seen for speed with my 502mag 415hp stock is 68~69..........guessing low to middle 60's with that power.

carreraboy1 07-29-2011 04:56 PM

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the input

carreraboy1 07-29-2011 07:05 PM

I can't find any other 1996's for sale. Does anyone know what they usually go for in good condition?

My Addiction 07-29-2011 09:45 PM

low 30's high 20's.
Mine had a (not orginal) 300hp 454 mag when I bought it and it did 56mph on gps, so you should do low 60's. Now I run 77 with just over 500hp

wreckedbikes 08-01-2011 09:28 AM

Carreraboy.............. are you looking at the repo one in CT?

R Addiction 08-01-2011 08:54 PM

Nick, Just over 500 HP? How much over? Any other upgrades? Shorty drive? Come on give it up?

My Addiction 08-01-2011 10:11 PM

Ok here it comes:

489ci(454w/ .25" stroke no bore)
Hardin-Marine Full Retro roller cam set 236/244-.591/.601
Aluminum Edelbrack Marine heads
10-1 compression
Hardin XS Intake(HP 500 style) w/ 850 carb
EMI Thunder exhaust
Stellings Ext box. propshaft 3" below hull, for now...
Labbed 28 Bravo I
77.1mph gps/radar varified at 5250ish RPMs.
I would like to figure out a way to lower the slip a little, and ride flatter on smoother water. Getting ready to lower propshaft .5" this week and see what happens.

HP never proven on dyno. But most say right around 500 or a little more. What do you think? Honestly.

R Addiction 08-02-2011 08:27 AM

Hmmmm......Sounds like it should be a bit more. Another 25 AT out on the bay with a warmed over 500 EFI supposed 600 HP and hes running a tick under/over 80mph. No box spinning a 28 labbed Bravo One 4 blade I do believe.

My Addiction 08-02-2011 02:54 PM

which one? Bostick

Gordo, Nevul and some other Tantrum were getting high 70's to low low 80's with Hp 500's, but those were settup for race.

A guy I know from up my way. 2000 Tantrum.

DjMikeyC 08-03-2011 09:25 AM

Construction methods for 1996 Tantrum? Plywood in them or PVC at this point?

I found one for sale with a stock 454 mag / bravo setup. Cabin needs attention, headliner coming off walls and ceiling. Alum swim platform. No trailer. Plain white no graphics except the thunder logo.

R Addiction 08-03-2011 11:56 AM

I looked at this online. Would love to have this project.

DjMikeyC 08-03-2011 01:16 PM

R Addiction - Any thoughts on it?

carreraboy1 08-03-2011 04:25 PM

Sorry guys already have my deposit in... Picking her up tomorrow!!!

DjMikeyC 08-03-2011 04:44 PM

Funny they are still taking bids on it.

R Addiction 08-03-2011 04:55 PM

Almost positive its a plywood boat. Just check the transom for moisture (moisture meter).

I have a trailer built for a Tantrum and cash. And all the time in the world. Road trip?:party-smiley-004:

DjMikeyC 08-04-2011 04:52 PM

I called today to see about my bid and they said it was sold... Good Luck to the new owner... Is that you carreraboy1? Guess I'm still looking for a boat...

R Addiction - Thanks for the info... yes that would be a plywood boat... I heard from Pat at AT and he confirmed that in 96 they were still using plywood in them.

So when did it go no wood. Survey moisture meter read 0 all over my '98

DjMikeyC 08-04-2011 10:39 PM

In the 1999 literature I have it lists micro-laminate stringer systems and PVC coring.

I have a 25 Tantrum Spec Sheet, and Brochure Booklet showing all models. I have a Y2K price sheet for the 21, 25, and 28. I also have a 1999 Options list w/ prices.

I know of 2 '94s for sale. One is a 25, The other is a 32. The guy with the 25 wants the 32. No deal yet. One or both will sell. I don't know exact prices, I don't want to quote wrong. Call Steve 1 847 543 1535. Both are in Chicago. Fresh
