Need Advise on Apache purchase
What are the prose & cons of purchasing the "No Reservation" Apache? Boat looks great and Sterling has a pair of 900's that would potentially provide adequate power. Any comments are appreciated. Owned a 30' Phantom so this is a major upgrade.
|
What is the claimed top speed, what drives. Just picked up my 41' this year.
|
To me it looks like the previous owner did a nice restoration on the boat and spend a lot of money... I've never seen it in person but it looks like a nice piece.
The con could the #3 drives on 900hp, they are only rated for 750hp and can go higher but the drives aren't in production any more. I thought the owner was doing a #6 conversion, was it ever completed? |
I have seen th eboat in person and have to say it is in tip top shape, the owner realy did a nice job on it .
The interior is almost new and with twinn 900 she should run in the low 90's. I would add #5's and she be a screamer !!!!! |
Still has #3- good call D'Anniabelle said the same about #3's includinf serviceabliity. Trying to confirm complete restoration prior to trip to OK. What power do I need to push over 100 MPH?

There are a few out there that are fast with moderate power.. For instance Dr Gary's is a light one with no cabin and runs mid 80's with 750's (merc 800s). The old starchaser which is also a light, no cabin, runs over 100mph with something like 900 hp. I've seen some pleasure versions run low 80's with 850's while others claim 100 mph with 900's but I doubt it severly. The pleasure version weights are all over, 13K - 15K from what I've heard... My boat is 36', is a pleasure and weighs 10,500, runs just under 90 mph with 800's for comparison. My honest opinion is if you wanna go 100mph in an 41' just get a 3/6 man, race lay-up with 1000's. :) Stinson knows more than I do. |
With my limited experience in our boat, these 41's were designed to run an honest and strong 85 mph all day long. I would recommend a new technology boat with less horsepower which will keep the reliability up compared to 1000hp motors (time bombs)
|
MM x-boat ran mid 90's with 800SC's but it only weighs in at 8500# full of fuel !!!!!!!
|
the Phantom was a 30' Will Smith enclosed canopy - race layup.
|
I'm stuck on speed but love the classic line of this 41' - maybe 85mph with sensible Sterlings is the way to go.
|
we have a nice 41 we will sale it has new 622ci 990hp #5 drives it runs 98mph full stagger setup we are going to trump this week end with it hope to see some boats out there
|
I have seen Andy's boat in person and been in it.
As far as speed goes if that is your primary concern I wouldn't by an Apache (get a ts gun with 700's and nxt's and go 100mph). It is like the guy that buys a a restored GTO vs a brand new corvette (totally different animals). If you like old school and the history then this is a cool pleasure 41' It ran low 90's with the motors that Andy built and put in it. Here is a clip from the shootout last year in flat water. I was going 65-67mph and he is obviously going a good 20mph faster than me and he was taking it easy because he was still breaking the mills in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTaTDO1PAF0 It is my understanding that when it was built Andy's boat was Jack Kramers personal boat (Ben's Father). I remember I commented to Andy when I was sitting in the cabin "if only these walls could talk LOL.." My advice is determine what it is you truely want and if a pleasure 41' is it then go take a look. I think you are on the right track with the reliable sterling power. Here is another clip when it is a little bumpy. In the snot there is something to be said about running along at 75-85mph and not spilling your beverage because there is always going to be someone faster. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9CdG...eature=related |

Don't get me wrong. No Reservation is a nice boats, and the owner put a lot of time and money into. Everything about new construction is new tech compared to 20 years ago. Raw materials are better, drives are stronger, Merc. power is reliable and more fuel effeciant. Electronics are more advanced. and todays hull is with or without steps.

I disagree about construction, Apache used materials back in the day that have still not been matched. There is nothing advanced about balsa cored saber hulls.

What materials are you talking about Tex? Plywood? Woven roving and matt? The newer boat is going to have tri-axial and bi-axial weaves to start(090's and 045's). Hybrid poly/ vinyl resin is another plus that wasn't around back in the day.
I watched one win the NYC SBI race in F-2 class back then... :) |

2000 timeframe 36' (Blue Moon for instance) had biax and vinylester along with non-wood materials and a step which was good for up to 1K-1500 lbs weight savings and 7-10 mph on the water. :)

"The Chief" Runs an Honest 80Mph with 6 people and 1/2 load of fuel and we ran 85mph testing props 1 day in summer of 08' 2-3 footers with a borrowed set. Chief 850SC's and Merc 3A drives. I helped Rob do a lot of work on the boat when I worked for him. Full Pleasure 41' Apache, What does Tatonka run? with Chief 980's and No.6's that's a full pleasure as well bigger power and 6's???
|
'Medicine Man' is for sale@$160,000 w/power and drives. By the time you put engines and drives in NoRes you will be above $200k I would think.
If I had the money, MM would be mine. |
You guys are still all over the board with this BS.....Apache is an Icon in the Marine Industry.....did anyone ever see the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds???? The scene about Ferrari's where if you buy the current model you're just an over indulgent veiner with too much bloody money BUT if you buy the whatever GTO 250 you're a connoisseur......
Well the same applies here.... No Res is undoubtedly a nice piece but you have to ask yourself what your plan is....If it's 100mph save your money not going to happen I dont care if you put 1700 Sterlings in it the possibility exists but not the probability of attaining 100mph....trust me I have won more money in bets on Apache speeds than anybody out there!!!!! Now if you want a nice piece to go bar hopping and do some wave crushing on certain days in the mid eigthies then she is you huckleberry!!!!! |
Everybody keeps banging technology into this conversation as well......when Apache was built it was the leader in new technology.....it used a proprietary 5 axis blend kevlar and vinylester resin when they were laid up with marine grade plywood bulkheads and transom the rest was a solid laminate boat......(later carbon fiber was added to the kevlar lay-up)
New boats use foam or balsa coring with vacuum bagging process and/or post cured epoxy lay/ups again see previous posts about Ferrari's Enough said....you can make your choice from here!!!!! 1 thing I will tell you I haven't found a boat yet that matches the ride in the rough.....PERIOD!!!!! |

I would agree Sean, there is nothing like the ride of an Apache, period

Yes, 5 axis was available (blended bi and tri... 090 plus 045... the combination gives an effective 5th axis at 37.5 degrees... ie 2 + 3) but that was by no means the standard. In 83 at Sonic we offered Bi-axial, but it was an upgrade. AND, in my opinion, it's the weight that makes an Apache ride so well. Just my 2 cents... but Steve would be the one who could give more tech info on the hx of laminations.
|
All I can say after owning quite a few boats kept dreaming of something else. Once you go Apache you dont go back. I dont dream or think much about owning something else. I dont spend time looking through classifies I dont collect boat sales info anymore.

65K (maybe less) and you could have a fixer upper and build it the way you want it. Looks like it has some potential: http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o35488-en.html

Jt As far as Sean's comment about the GTO vs the modern exotic ride that really is the best way to explain it. Our 36' isn't fast and even with upgrades will never be a triple digit boat, but cruising with friends down the main channel of LOTO on a busy saturday @ 55mph through the slop puts a smile on my face every time... |
