You need to know what size u-joints the shaft takes. 1.75's are the best ones. If the kits don't come with the driveshafts, let me know, I know a guy........
Otherwise, make sure they have the steering wings, inner transom plates, inspection plate covers, and driveshafts. You will need longer hoses for your steering rams also and exhaust y-pipe block offs & 4 tubes of 5200 to seal the boxes to the transom. Also, get the 2(ea) short studs to replace the long ones on your existing transom assemblies. I'm already on the lookout for 380's, but if I have to get new ones I might hit you up for your connection. |

What's the cost of (1) new stellings complete? Rough estimate to have installed (Labor rates $80/Hr)?

It is about a grand to R&R one engine. I can't comment on the Stellings box for cost, but my IMCO's were around $2500 a piece ( I think)

Give Andy@ Wilson Performance Marine in Bay City a call he did my engines last summer for 1700.00 in and out...I don't know what he'd charge for installing a extension box, but I'd be more apt to go with a IMCO on your setup then put a -2" shorty on it. I know all this was suggested by Jason and JT, but I'm just reinterating it. You'll be at the same X dimension, but ultimately you'll be in cleaner water and have a longer running length also changing your trim angle so to speak. |
I have been tagging along with you on this, don't mean to take anything away from the original posts.
It will be a winter projest as well for me. I do not want to raise the engine and repair fiberglass. I really do not have an opinion on either brand, just want the beneift of an ext box. My boat is at Wilson's Marine as we speak getting the trim sender and switched repaired and will get an estimate from Andy when I pick it up. Do any of these come with steering as standard equipment? |

it depends what your prop shaft height was before, most baja boats are 7 to 7 1/2 '', they run much better at 5 to 5 1/2'' and with a box 4 to 41/2'' other boats as stepped hulls run even better at 3 to 3 1/2'' I have been keeping a log of all the guys I have meet in my quest to figure out the sweet spots on most boats.my buddy could not get his box set up right was to high gave up re set the drive to 4 1/2'' no box its a 26 degree vee, right now I have to go with 4'' with my new konrad drive with box, I hope we can get it there with out moving the motor, I also have a 5 blade to start with 30. and motor about 1000 to 1100 not on the dyno yet. it should be running in july and my boat with a bravo was 5 to 5 1/2'' I never wrote it down before it was stolen. |

If you do +3 boxes from IMCO you have to raise the engines 3" which means raising the exhaust 3" which means custom tails if you have headers.
A neutral IMCO box with -2" shorties will get you where you want to go. Stellings with -2" IMCO lowers will give you the most flexibility & that would be the route I would take in your shoes. |

but he would only gain 1'' in height cause when you go out 12'' you need to go up at least 1'' to stay even, at 7 1/2'' thats so deep go with the 3'' box and deal with the exhaust holes by if you have wet exhaust you can have a adapter made cheap out of ss, if you have dry you need to send them to the header shop they came from cmi stellings sm. but its cheaper than two boxes/ two shorties, JS , what are yours at.
Mine are at 4.5" or so. |
