I wouldn't put much faith in that the factory did anything special......I'm pretty certain they installed both of my driveshafts out of phase Last fall. A guy rafted up with us that had just bought a 302 w/ HO's and Stellings boxes, he was complaining of the lack of performance of it, we took a ride and as I recall, the thing only ran 68-69 mph. I told him about Keiths problem, havent seen him yet this year to find out if he did anything about it, but a 302 w/HO's will definetely run better than what this boat was doing, so I'd bet $$$ that he was having the knock sensor issue. I hope you do luck out on this, because I'm thinking that whipple is the only one that does it, and they get 8 or 9 hundred $$ to do so. Something else that I just ran across in the latest merc manual I just got, is that on the units equipped with jackshafts, ( like the forward engine in a staggered installation) they are recommending that you phase the U-joint on the driveshaft end with the u-joint on the outdrive input shaft. I never gave it much thought, since their 2 seperate shafts, but, I'm going to set mine up this way. |

You will know if the knock sensor is retarding the timing when you take out the boat the first time after the installation - if you have somebody hook up a scan tool it will show the knock sensor tripping.

Any pics of this? I have very little knowledge of this sort of thing is why I take mine to a mechanic. But if there is something I can visualize or take a pic of it to him, it is easier for me to explain.
Thanks for the info. Bottom picture on this page shows what I mean. u-joint axis need to be parrellel you'll want to try to line up the box driveshaft yoke with the outdrive input shaft yoke http://jniolon.clubfte.com/driveline...nephasing.html |

Yes, I do but am beginning to regret the direction I took. The box came with everything I need on the outside of the transom but I neglected to think of anything I need on the inside. So $1800 later I have full to the helm steering...not yet installed yet but have it. Lessons learned. I just hope IMCO makes a good product.

Im glad I saw this, I just put my stuff back together and did not think to make sure my yokes were in phase, is it really critical?
Baja man, you might want to think about putting a "Drive Saver" in the box or on you flywheel, if you haven't allready. they are expensive but I have an extra if you want to buy, thanks Keith Atlanta:evilb: |

Tell me more about this.....I have not heard of it. Any pics as I would be really interested in one and he is starting to assemble everything now.
Here is my thread from a while back http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/d...ox-teague.html I went out today and the boat seems to shift quieter, then I remember from last year without the Drive Saver. Last year I was scared that my next shift would be my last everytime. But I did have a worn gimbal bearing and a worn U-joint, that is all new now, and new carrier bearings as well. |
