I agree all the way. Don't spend the money and time on the old stuff.

If you are selling in the near future, don't spent a lot on it, especially on mods. Ppl are usually not happy about home grown power, you'll never get your money back. Find something along the lines of what you're looking into. I'd agree that the 525EFI is a bit much to put into that boat, unless you can find a really sweet deal. A 500EFI or maybe a 496HO is interesting. A 496HO will put you around 65-66 mph.

my 2000 25 with a 502mpi and 580 hours on the motor will run 65 with 3 people, ice chest, and half tank! think with the right prop, and all the other bs he should see upper 60s maybe 70 with the HO if its set up right.

70 will never ever happen as a real everyday number with stock 496HO setup. Just as an example, a 26OL will run 65-67 dialed in, and the 25 is not really any faster. Your speed is right on, and speed diff on the 502 and 496HO is virtually non exsistant. 65-67 with a 496HO will be the number depending on labbed prop, weight ect. Besides what I've seen myself, there is also a few test out there, that shows 64-65 with newer 25OL's and 496HO's.

What about an hp500 that has more power than a 496ho doesn't it?? If I'm not mistaken I think the 496 ho is 425 horse and the hp500 is 470 ish, I would think that would get me close to 70. If I'm going to put a new / used motor in it then I will run it for the 2012 season until I find the right boat. What do you think it would cost for a used 496ho? I can get an hp500 with under 200 hours ready to drop in for around 8k.

According to Dustin @ whipple the 496HO makes 425 c hp +/- 2%, and the 500 makes 500 c hp. I asked a guy from Merc some time ago about it, and he confirmed that everything these days are c hp SAE. One of the main reason for this is that the motors comes as bobtails. Prop shaft hp is depending on many different factors, not only drive, but also lube, setup ect. therefore they've moved away from it. I know the 500 was rated 470 prop hp and 500 c hp. Go by the latter, it will give you the best comparison, same goes with the 525EFI ect. Dustin Whipple has tested the 525EFI's to be between 515-525 hp, using the same method and criteria as Merc.

Again, go with something original, it will make it much much easier to sell. A 496HO ect. as suggested would be good. If a 500HP, make sure that the valvesprings are ok, and with 200hrs on it, they should be new. The 500HP's had valvespring issues with broken springs.

You'll see about 72 with a hp500efi with proper prop setup.

On a good day, I have NEVER ran into these 25's, 26's and 272's that could run 70 with stock 496 ho's. I have talked to and ran into ALOT of guys with 25 outlaws that with 600+ hp could only get mid 70's. If you do buy the hp 500 don't do it thinking you will be breaking much more than 70 mph, if it goes faster, great but it takes a big power difference to get substantial speed gains. How fast gps did your boat run previously, Smitty

Smitty,
The boat bone stock with the 7.4 mpi (310) hp B1 23p mirage plus ran 54.5mph with two people and 3/4 fuel, I added the 5 psi pro charger and a 24p Bravo prop, I was lucky if I saw 64mph at best, same load 62 seemed like an everyday number. These are gps speeds.

I knew when I put the pro charger on it that it was just going to be a matter of time before it blew up and that was a chance I was willing to take for a few mph, so I couldn't pass up the deal I got on the pro charger. I don't have any rods comming out of my block lol!! But the engine just doesn't sound very healthy, and my oil is Milky so IMO it's junk! 450 hours total the pro charger was put on at 390 hours after I bought the boat. I finished the season and was able to run in a few poker runs so I can't complain to bad I guess.
The way it sounds there is not much speed difference between the 496ho and the hp500, so I guess what it's going to come down to is what motor I can find a better deal on.
Derek.

So winter is here and I am trying to plan my re power.....
