Merc Hp500 in a 2001 baja 25 outlaw??

Hey guy's,

My pro charged 7.4 lasted the season but I don't think it's going to make another season and I wasn't getting the speed I was looking to gain from it. I am looking to do a re-power this winter, I was told by a friend to go with a hp500 or the 500efi, just curious to see if anyone out there has run this setup in a 25 outlaw and what kind of speed was achieved with that motor. I would think low 70's......
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Seen a few over the years with that kind of power. Runs 69-72 depending on setup ect.

I had a 502 with a whipple in my 25 outlaw. If I remember correctly it would do 81 top speed. Mine was a 99 25 Outlaw. I was running low boost, so I was probably at about 550 hp. I think all the people I have seen with 25's that have 500 efi engines ran in the mid 70's.

I would love to see at least low to mid 70's for the amount of money that it's going to cost me for the hp500. I want to keep it naturally aspirated for reliability sake, but I do have a m1 pro charger off my other motor that would bolt up nicely with a few mods. hmmmm?

If you do that, aren't you kinda back where you started? Then you might as well rebuild what you have with the right internals. The 500EFI is a good candidate for some N/A mods. You will need 550-575 hp to run 74-76 as a true everyday number, and not just with some useless "kilo" style setup. As in a, no fuel, no equipment, no passengers, no food and drink, no fun setup.

I wasn't to keen on re using any of my old parts because the block is only a two bolt so it wouldn't hold up to big power, I could replace the internals with forged but then the heads would need to be upgraded as they are only the small peanut port heads. I'm not sure what that would cost but I would probably be looking at 4 to 5k right?? The motor I am currently running is the 7.4 mpi with a 5 psi pro charger and 24p bravo one prop, I was seeing a top speed of at most 63-64 light load two people and full tank. Pro charger estimated power to be about 500hp but I doubt that. Stock I was getting about 55 mph with a light load. I do have a lead on a merc 525 fully dressed but I'm not sure I want to spent that kind of money on this boat because I would like to upgrade soon....this 25 ol got small fast!! If I put the hp 500 or the 500efi in it I would think the re sale would be better when the
time comes.

I agree all the way. Don't spend the money and time on the old stuff.

If you are selling in the near future, don't spent a lot on it, especially on mods. Ppl are usually not happy about home grown power, you'll never get your money back. Find something along the lines of what you're looking into. I'd agree that the 525EFI is a bit much to put into that boat, unless you can find a really sweet deal. A 500EFI or maybe a 496HO is interesting. A 496HO will put you around 65-66 mph.

If you're already thinking of upgrading boats then like razor said I wouldn't be sinking too much money into it as you won't recoup it.

Irishtornado 12-07-2011 07:08 PM

If your planning on selling at all don't stick money into it. Put a 454Mag or 496HO in it and enjoy it. You won't get the money back a 500efi will cost to put in it either. Definately don't SC it you'll limit your market on resale end.

Baja_342 12-07-2011 08:22 PM

I couldn't agree more. As I browse for my future ride, like I do daily. As soon as I see something not stock under the hatch I don't even look at the rest of the pictures. Don't care what the price is....Procharger especially....Next.
