Trust me I thought the same thing. I did feel better when I got them and could see the quality and the weight of them compared to other cheaper lights I looked at. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Mine are Abyss lights and I know I paid less than $400 each.

Redneck engineering: Buy two halogen blue fog lights (or clear if you please). To Waterproof them: silicon any seams and where wires go in, put heavy tape with paper on face so it doesnt stick to the lense, dip in plasti-dip (hardware store for tool handles), revove tape after dry.
Twice as bright for $25-150. +no drilling holes in transom.

I saw a slick little mounting bracket that mounts the lights to the trim tab rather than though the transom

Seems simple, and I like the idea of not drilling/cutting into my transom more than necessary. Maybe make up an aluminum or stainless angle and bolt to the upper surface of the tabs.
On the "redneck engineering" front, why not use some high intensity LEDs instead, and waterproof them as required? Should also be able to source locally more easily....

i have coastal night lights on my boat, 2 single blues. they do pretty decent especially for the money but i am wanting more already. i was just on ebay and the oceanleds actually seem to be geting more affordable. they have a trailer series light that is ideal for most of us that do not leave our boats in the water. they are less resistant to to corrosion but if your boat doesnt sit in salt water all the time it wont be a issue. wal mart, yes wal mart has some underwater transom specific lights for 30 bucks each and honestly they are pretty bright for what you pay. there was a guy out one night with a set and i thought he had high dollar ones as bright as they were, when he told me they were wal mart lights a i about crapped my self lol
