Need opinions on 29 Outlaw
I am looking to upgrade from my '98 272 to the 29 Outlaw. What do you guys think of the one below? It is a '99, which is a little older than I would like, but it has brand new twin 383 strokers. Pictures look fairly clean. I am mainly interested in what everyone thinks of the motors and what I might expect for cruising/top speed with cruising being about 3200-3400 rpm. Any input on price would be helpful too. Thanks in advance.

What is a factory 383 stroker? I know in the early 2000's they made the scorpion small blocks. The horsepower shows 700 total so that doesn't match up with 350 mags or the 6.2 liter engines. I would want more info on the power. Other than the transom the boat looks fairly clean. Find out what pitch props are on the boat, that will help determine speeds. Assuming stock small blocks I'd say top end around 65 on gps.

Well if it really has 700HP I would think more in the 70+ range. I think the 330's boats will run close to 70, and you are talking more HP with less weight.

Thanks guys. Here is the info on the repower. Looks like you can order 383 Strokers from the factory. Horsepower is listed as 350. http://www.mercurymarine.com/repower...stroker-bravo/

Seems like most of the boats with stock 7.4s (300 propshaft hp, 330 crankshaft hp) ran mid 60's. My dad had a '97 with those engines and we saw 70 once and 68 anytime we wanted but that seems rare. I've even had a couple of people on here call me a liar for saying he hit 70 but I saw the gps with my own eyes. |
I would think 70 would be a possiblity with those motors and the right props. 496 mag boats run 73-75, so 50 less horsepower, but less weight, should theoretically balance out somewhat.

just from the pictures, there is a lot of wear. the cabin carpert is either faded or stained. rear hatch wood is all rotted and needs replacing, the windscreen is missing. starbord bolster looks like the seams are coming apart at bottem of left arm rest. Saw this boat all last year on the internet. Not sure if it is the wrap or not but above cabin door looks like 2 real good cracks. May just be from the seams on the wrap.

I have experience with a 383 Stroker. You can buy them from merc with a 1 yr warranty. HP is 350. Small block. Very nice motor. Outperformed the 454 330 HP it replaced. No issues with torque. You just need to make sure you prop it right. Props used on 454 do not work well. I replaced the 454 with the 383 stroker in a 252SS Formula. Was a good choice. This engine is designed to replace the 454 by Merc.

Thanks for the info guys and good eyes on the engine hatch. I am about to replace the wood and upholstery on my 272 engine hatch next week so I know what thats all about. It could give me some bargaining power if I decide to make an offer.
