Should i keep my 33OL or sell it?
I just bought a 1999 33OL last year. twin 496. Redo the upholstery and upgraded the speakers system with JLs. Everything were doing great untill TickFaw 200. Seen many nice boat out there, especially the Cigarette 38 Top Gun. So, should I move up or stay where I am at.
|
Move on UP!!
What could go wrong |
Well A LOT of nice hardware showed up there! It will be tough to upgrade boats, show up again, and not have the feeling of wanting to upgrade boats again!
How do you use your boat? Family? Swimming? Overnighting? Bar hoping? frequent poker runs? How often, how many hours a year? Whats your budget like for not only the boat but the UP KEEP!? What goals would you like out of a new boat? The 33 Outlaw is a special boat. It Does a lot of stuff great, is one of the best Baja hulls. Has a HUGE cockpit. Overall is an EXCELLENT bang for the buck. Would you rather upgrade boats and have less money to actually go boating, or keep what you have and go out on the water MORE? |
I sure do love hearing all these good things about the 33OL... ha

I agree with what OffEx says.. I bought mine b/c of the cockpit space and the enclosed head...there are very FEW in its size or even larger that has this much cockpit room. Mine is a 98 which I got a super deal with NEW motors.. Plan to add Hydo steering, drive indicators, a Wrap and a host of minor lil things and plan on keeping this one for a while! Keep it!! (depending on your goals, ego, and budget :evilb:) I found exactly what I wanted and didn't break the bank AND skipped 2ft idis by getting a 29-30ft when upgrading. |

Family ,Bar Hoping and Poker Runs How often, how many hours a year? we are trying to take the boat out at least once every weekend when the weather permits during the boat seasons Whats your budget like for not only the boat but the UP KEEP!? Well, if just the basic oil, fluids, that's no problems at all. just not rebuild the engine every year. hahah What goals would you like out of a new boat? 80mph plus, XR outdrive. maybe AC and Gen set. Blue motors The 33 Outlaw is a special boat. It Does a lot of stuff great, is one of the best Baja hulls. Has a HUGE cockpit. Overall is an EXCELLENT bang for the buck. finding a CIG with genny, is almost impossibe I did say almost. but holly **** its hard.
Cigs are a dream of mine. BUT one thing i have realised they are not for me, I stay on the boat, need a bath room, like aminitys. and thats lacking in them for the most part. now if you want to runt he boat, and stay in a hotel. thats the boat to have. |
Depending on your budget a Donzi ZR might work? I have seen lots of 38's and a Few 35's with Blue motors, A/C is pretty common, not sure about Gensets?
This boat has pretty much everything you want/need, I have no connection to it, but, have spoke to the owner and he seems like a very nice fella and has maintained the boat meticulously http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o49661-en.html You might find a nice 35-38ft Fountain reasonable, both boats will have stepped hulls and will run quicker than your current set up, stock 500EFI's shouldn't break the bank on maintainance. I don't know your budget, so, just throwing out some options, I am sure you could find a nice Nor tech or Outerlimits with the options you want pretty easily, if you got the budget for it. Hope this helps! Michael |
Someone is always going to have a nicer faster boat! I remember when I bought my 25OL, to me I had the baddest boat on the water , I couldn't help wondering out to the driveway just to look at it, then the newness faded and i started looking again and questioning my purchase! This all goes away the second I dip her!
I've learned to be happy with what I have, and not to make life a competition that I could never win! |
That's pretty nice.. like the cuddy but that cockpit is small.. he couldn't even get the floor in the pic of the bench.. you can see the back of the bolster..
Again.. depends what he wants.. sacrifice somewhere!! Happy with my 33 ol and get to keep my Baja shirts, hat and coozie!!! Though I need another sticker for the jeep!! :evilb: |
I have never been in the boat, so, I cant speak for certain, but, the pic with 4 people standing up it appears the cockpit is pretty good size, again, cant say for certain. 37ft boat usually has a pretty decent sized cockpit, especially since the motors aren't staggered.
Just throwing it out there |

size difference :) imagine adding the space from the back of the bolster to your dash on the 25ol.. Now add that between the bench and your bolster :evilb: see pic.. there is still some room to the bench.. that box is a radio box that I was about to install.. I put my JUMBO fenders in the gunnel! Steven720.... again.. my vote KEEP HER! Why give up this space! |
I to store 2 8.5 inch fnders, and all my ropes in the gunnels.

yes.. Huge space in Cockpit.. Not giving that up.. Can hold ice chest and still not in the way to walk around. so big.. wife asked the first time we took it out why it was quieter than the 25ol.. so, I walked to the bench! It was b/c we were so far a way from it now!! :hijack: VOTE AGAIN>> KEEP HER! |
Easy decision.
If you like to run fast not burn a ton of fuel and play in the ruff? Get rid of it fast. These boats (33-36) will beat you to death in the rough and fail apart. If you like a cruiser with the go fast look keep it. They have tons of room and still look fast. For myself best thing I did was dump my 36. It looked great but was a pig on fuel, speed, and couldnt handling the rough. Never wanted to go out of the bay. Great raft up boat but horrible runner. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/DSC05360.jpg http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l...g/DSC05167.jpg http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/l..._6401916_n.jpg |

I agree, if you are looking to run fast, a straight hull probably isn't your best bet. Stepped hull and (if you have room) staggered drives are a better choice, if speed is your ONLY goal then buy a Cat, but, insurance can sometimes be REALLY expensive. I guess it's like someone mentioned earlier, what's your desire or motivation to move up? |

maintainance and up keep will be MORE Expensive with a larger and faster boat. As great as blue engines are they still need rebuilds and freshening. Some have had head gasket issues, some header leaks, etc. Awesome engines but you still have to plan on putting money into them, and sometimes sooner then you would hope. And since they are more horsepower, high end engines, they cost more to rebuild. XR drives are nothings special, they actually suck. Plan on rebuilding them more often they you can imagine. Even behind stock blue power they break, sometimes as soon as 80 easy family hours. So yeah, upgrade boats, just remember your slush fund needs to be MUCH larger then it is now, or you will have one sweet boat, broke down at the dock. Good luck and enjoy your shopping, dreaming, and current boat in the mean time! |

Had a 33OL before the 42 Fountain we now have. We really loved it for day boating and great looks. Handled and docked so well it was a pleasure. The 42 runs smoother and handles rough water better but with less cockpit space and harder to dock. I had a 2004 with 496HOs and went 72 with labbed Bravo 28's with four people and half a tank.

If you got a reliable ride you enjoy KEEP it!

I used to come back from Emerald Coast every year dying to upgrade to a 38' something with blue motors. One thing to keep in mind is where you boat. Nothing in Lake Charles you can do with a 38 that you couldn't do with a 33. Bottom line is your finances. If its going to stretch the budget at all, I'd keep what you have.
