The 420 stepped Baja????
In the '97 Baja brochure, there is a nice big poster of the converted and totally customized 420 Boss with twin steps, tripple 800 merc SC's, #6 dry sumps, custom exhaust with ports out of the sides of the boat, port and starbard helms with removable wheels (like the OL's) etc. etc. etc.
They used this boat for promotion's and the apba circuit pace boat. I believe they (Baja?) was trying to sell this boat a year or so ago for cheap (for the boat) as I recall....like upper to mid 100's. The thing is f*ckin SICK! To say the least and possibly the nicest Baja ever built (still awaiting the Skater/Baja;) ) This boat has been talked about on this forum before in various threads. My question is......Where the hell is this boat now?? Anyone know who bought it? Or IF someone bought it at all? Anyone see it running anywhere? I would guess it would be running somewhere in Ohio. Anyone know???? Tank |
That thing is awsome... I've wondered where it is myself. (maybe by the time I retire I'll have enough in my 401k to buy it) I have the poster hung above my computer at home and always find myself staring at it daydreaming... what if?
|
LOL, Dave I have the poster hung up too....I do the same thing....I look at it every day. When I saw it was for sale at that relatively cheap price, I couldn't believe it. So where is it now???
|
Ah that nothing. I have the 40 Outlaw poster above my desk and the hammer wallpaper on my computer. Talk about your extremes. Daydreaming on the wall and the goal for 2004 on the computer. I am looking to buy my first boat, probably a hammer, in the spring of 2004. If I could only get those damn bills paid off quicker.
So riding in my dads cat for one more year. |
I have that 42 step boat picture hung on the cieling at the top of the stairs as I go down into my basement!! See it every day when I get home as that is also where my back door is. Awsome boat!!!!!
|
I've got the same poster hanging above the computer at home as well. Awesome looking boat!! I wonder how it handled being that Baja isn't known for their stepped hulls:rolleyes: :D and it never made it to production. I mean if it did work good, don't you think they would have made them (at least out of their custom shop)?
Just thinking out loud:D |
Believe it or not guys, that boat is in good ol Iowa, owned by a small Baja dealership that's about as large as the town. The motors have been completely redone, and he's working over the hull right now. He will be running it down at LOTO. It's COMPLETELY awesome, but was in pretty rough shape when he got it. Has trick stuff like camera's on the dash to watch the engines and stuff like that. The engine compartment is big enough to put my 232 in it.! I've looked it over quite a bit, and it looks to me like a reworked 420. I've heard say that the boat will run 107mph.......
Just never know what you'll find in Iowa. 'Sorcerer' is from here also. We've got some serious boating geeks with 2 much damn money :D |
Would somebody post a pic of the boat? OK Baja Daze, go to work and find it, that is, if you can!!
What? That boat will run at LOTO? Man, wish I could be there. Unfortunately, family coming in from Flordia cancelled the trip. |
Okay guys, Is this the one??

Let me preface this by appologizing for the poor quality of this pic, let me explain:
I took this awesome sunset photo in November of 2000, during the St. Pete World Championships. I had it enlarged to 36" X 24" and had it framed. It sits above my desk in my office and I stare at it all the time. :D :D So, I carried this huge framed photo over to our little scanner and did my best to scan it in three parts. This is what I came up with. Believe me, the original is awesome! Now, to the boat...It is one of the all time most beautiful, most awesome boats, I've ever seen. I hope it's the same one you guys are talking about!!! |
I would take a pic, but he never pulls it out of the shed, and it's literally as big as the shed, so i couldn't get back far enough to get a good shot. It's still dressed in the pace boat graphics, but i'm not sure if he's going to change that or not. O, the interior is all redone also, so it's getting close to water time...:p
|
NO, NO, NO,
He can't change the graphics! That thing is a work of art! And I don't want it if he changes it. ;) |
Actually, i don't think he'd care if anybody knew where it's at, he'll show it to anybody that wants to see it. It's in Low Moor IA, Hawkeye Boat Sales. Population 280.
I hope he keeps the graphics also. I'm guessing he will. If I get up there, i'll try and take some pics of something just to tease everybody. Did somebody say it was a twin step, cause I only remember 1 step. Maybe i'm forgetting tho. I just remember thinking how kick a$$ the side exhaust was. I think he bought it pretty much for what the motors and #6's would sell for. Still 2 rich for my blood tho....:( |
BTW
The "Team Baja" graphics are killer... why did they only use them on fishing boats? Oh and my poster is framed :p |
Nick, you are killing me...I thought you might have to search a little for it, but come on, man!!!!!! It was in front of you the whole time!!
|
Hey,
What's that they say?..."There's a picture for every reason"....or wait...Is it "A Reason for every picture..." :D :D :D |
Yep, you're right! The family that owns Hawkeye Boat Sales in Iowa have it now. That is one sweet ride! These guys know how to set up Baja's. If they change anything, they'll make it better. They have a Doug Smith special edition 36' Outlaw with staggered 750HP Merlins as well.
|
Awesome...Thanks Gottahaveit!
Looks great up close in that detail! If I'm not mistaken, the graphics were done by Kangaroo Graphics. What ever happened to them?...Their website is no longer available... |
Ah-HAH!! I knew you guys wouldn't let me down!!:D
So it's in Iowa and they prob. bought it from Baja themselves. I figured it would be in ruff shape since it was used by so many different people who weren't the "actual" owners i.e. dealers, reps, etc. I think they were selling it for 150K. well UNDER the cost of 3 #6's and 3 800 sc's. Hope they get it on the water soon. That thing is one of the nices boats I've ever seen!! Mad Max.....Try to get some shots of the engines...I'd really be interested in seeing exactly how the rigging was done on those pipes. |

They used the **** out of it on the apba circuit for a couple of years. I think the reason they did not put it into production is there commitment to building non-stepped traditional offshore style hulls. I'm sure it was Baja's way of saying, "Look, you nay-saying loosers...you don't think Baja can build a top of the line bad ass twin stepped boat, built as good or better than ANY other offshore boat on the market for under half the price....Well here it is!!! Now F*CK OFF!!" Of course, that's just the way I see it...I could be wrong:D :D :D Tank |
That's a nice assessment, Tank!
I agree, that's probably exactly what they were thinking!!! :D :D :D And they said it so well, with such an awesome boat! |
Well guys, went up there today to shoot some pics, and it's already gone. Somebody from Lake of the Ozarks is gonna hafta take some pictures now. Said he's got some electrical bugs to work out, but it's back in action. Bummer. Anybody from around there that can find it?
|
If I am not mistaken...
That boat has been sitting at Competion Marine in St. Charles, Missouri for sometime now.. I guess the Hackmann's are working on it...
|
That's prob true, I haven't been up to see it for months. If they build engines, that's prob who he had do them, he said it was in MI where he was having them done.
For you Baja junkies, they did have another '1 of 1' up there. A 36 Outlaw with staggered twins. Supposedly it's the only 1 ever built with staggered engines, and they were 650hp each. Anybody ever heard of another one? Kinda wild looking with an 8' sunpad....... |

I for one am glad that Baja is staying with the true V thing but with all the money that went into making that one boat, I think if it was all that, they would have tried to recoup some of the development costs by selling them (at least in limited production) O.K. so there one boat out there. Why not 10?? :D |
I had to bring this thread out of the arcives. I was laying in bed staring at the poster of this boat on my wall and thinking no one ever posted pics of the way it looks now or the whole details on where it is etc.
Soooooo, someone please find this thing and take some photos. Thanks. Tank |
H.T.
How the hell do you always know all the info about Baja?? And wheres the pics of your boat?? It's all re-rigged right? Anyway, if you read through the thread someone mentioned it was indeed getting the re-fit it needed. This was a year ago, so I'm wondering if anyone has seen it lately. It's possibly at LOTO....? Someone has got to know what the update is on this thing. |
Thanks for the article post Chris!
|
You got it, HT!
|
anyone know Barb Schorpp, the fortunate one.

no no go to post #30 and read it hawkeye boat sales in low moor Iowa mike ohrt is the owner. this boat is about 80 miles from my house its a super cool boat I have seen it. mike is good guy and also very good to deal with.
|
Ahhhh, yes, I missed post 30 some how.
However, I would still like to see some "actual" pics of this thing on the water and the engine compartment and close ups of the interior etc etc etc. Someone out in Iowa needs to step up and take some pics!;) This boat is like a legend. It's got to be the only stepped baja ever produced, correct?? |
You know, that's a good point. Except the 420 was a real tangable boat. The Skater/Baja was never finished. What ever happened to that hull. I know it was done and the deck lid was almost done as well. Pretty much just needed to be fit together. Who has that thing now? Still sitting at Douglas Marine??
|
As far as I know, it's not in Iowa anymore..... Mike keeps it at LOTO. He's having a poker run I believe next weekend down there, so I would imagine it'll be visible to everyone. ;)
|
yep your right summer time is LOTO and winter is in Iowa. I think he would be happy to show you the boat I know I would be.
|
On the subject of the Skater/Baja....Where is it H.T.? Did they keep that deck with the seperation down the middle?? Sweet looking boat.
On the subject of the 420 being in LOTO next weekend for the poker run....Someone has GOT to take some photos of that thing (Close ups!) |
:D Yea, that was fairly vague. But I got the picture.;) :D
|
Nice thread everyone. I swear, I do not know how some of you remember all this stuff. I guess it is just a matter of how involved you are with the boat in question...
Great info though...thanks guys. Hey Tank....you gonna upgrade??:D :D Hell you got 50k wrapped up in suspension parts alone....hahahahahaah |
Dude, the plan is to upgrade the truck and the boat. But buying a house right now..That puts a damper on the boat/truck thing. Especially when its a house on the beach in Southern Cali. Frickin houseing markets out of control!!!!
|
hey I thouht the new racing skater spiderman was the baja project boat ? anyone:confused:
