The cops in Ohio are notorious. If your above 90.000001 Db forget it. Here's the law which most states will probably adopt:
SAE J2005: This measures the engine sound at idle with the microphone 1.0 m away. SAE recommends a limit of 90dbA for this method, which does not account for the speed or power of the boat.
SAE J1970 In realizing the enforcement difficulties of the previous methods, SAE designed this shoreline noise test enabling regulations keeping the boat under 75 dBA at 50 ft. by operation, not mechanics. The operator is responsible for controlling the noise of the boat.
Here's the actual state law:

I've been REAL lucky the last two seasons. No tickets , just a few dirty looks. I've got a 540 with a pretty big cam and my CMI's are pretty much dry, the water dumps right at the end of the tailpipes.
I think what helps is I have a molded swimplateform and it's just a single engine boat.
In all fairness the noise can be annoying even for me, especially on long cruises. It is just a matter of time before I bolt on some switchable mufflers.

26 Scarab,
Better steer clear of Put-In-Bay and Catawba Island harbors. Kellys is a little better but I've seen the noise police hanging around the Casino as well.
The old Lonz's is now state run and I'm sure they would give a check as well.
Michigan seems to be more relaxed overall. Even the state police on the highway do not bother you unless your really moving. They seem to be more worried about safe boating versus the letter of the law.

I can relate to this .... a few years ago when I had the 572 in the boat we had spent the night at a local park with tie up docks. Well in the am , about 7:00, the No-See-Ums, bugs/gnats were so bad we decided to fire up and go get some breakfast. So as i'm ideling out this guy stumbles out of his boat and starts yelling at me how he is going to call the rangers on me, bla,bla,bla....I need to add, this guy was in a Blow-Boat !!!
So it didn't even phase me to idle past him a little close !!! And yes the rangers did contact me but no big deal. Wardey

Dont even get me started on sail boaters!!! Where we live theres alot of them....And I sh!t you not, I think every time we are out running we have a run in with one. The last example was, we were coming back into the harbor in my buddies Cafe Racer (still outside the harbor entrance!) running about 40 getting ready to come off plane. This sail boater is maybe 40 feet off our port side...he leans out the side and with this pissed off face yells, slow down!" while pushing down with his hands....I looked over with out heitation and flipped him off...he got so pissed he followed us back into the harbor got in front of us then almost jumped up and down when he got our reg numbers.....What the hell is he going to do..call the harbor patrol and say "this cigarette was going like 40 out in the ocean!!"
Sail boaters are f*ckin punks!!

How would you feel about me if I told you I finished 3rd in the Rebel Class Nationals in 1999 (16foot sailboats) and race Laser sail boats on occasion....HAHAHAHHAAAAAA. As they say....."just damn glad to be here on the water...". Actually, some of my Dad's sailboat buddies love my boat and ask for rides!!!!
I grew up around ski boats, jetskis, rowboats, fishing, pontoons and sailboats. All inland lake stuff. Just love being on the water, no matter what I am doing. Now, the people who *****........me no likey.....
