Over the past couple of years, I noticed that Baja has started to make some of their cockpit covers black (depending on the colors of the boat). Does anyone have any input on black cockpits covers? I’m going to have a new one made out of Aqualon vs. Sunbrella. I’m 80% sure I’ll go with red but I’m tossing around the idea of black.

Chris,
You may have sold me on the heat thing. That was one of my initial concerns. During the week I have a full cover over the boat but over the weekend, it’s just the cockpit cover. I would have to rule out a color like yellow since my boat had black and red graphics. I thought about gray like Reggie uses on his boats but it looks too industrial.

Do you leave your boat in covered storage out of the sun? I would not want a black cover since it will absorb maximum heat, which will in turn get the engine hatch cushion, seats, etc. really hot which will accelerate the damage to the leather (vinyl?). I have a purple cover on mine, and for a while kept my boat outside (lake was very low, couldn't use lift). One day in the sun I climbed on the boat to take the cover off and got 1st degree burns on my plams and knees the boat was so &@#$ hot!
Maybe accelerate the damage.......we hace a 1990, both covers are black, always stored outside. Yes it does get REALLY hot in the summer, taking the cover off, putting it on burns your hands.
