2004 30 baja outlaw ?

what true gps speeds will this boat run with 496 ho's ? dealer says 80 + ?

29 OUTLAW 01-04-2004 11:00 AM

The debate rages over on TBM. Go have a look. Nobody can agree on how fast, nonetheless, I think we would all agree that over 80 bone stock ain't happening. I'm sticking with 77-78 from the factory with 28" 4 blade props and my guess is on the high side compared with what many other are guessing.

I don't see a 10 mph diff from mags to ho's, a 33 only gets about4-5 mph

BURNSMAZZ 01-06-2004 05:03 AM

I would have to agree with Asset,I don't see a 10mph swing between motors.

375 HP 4400-4800 RPM " " 26 B1 prop

RPM limitation is my main beef with 496 non-HO. Peak HP on that engine is seen at only 4600rpm. This is reminiscent of the old anemic 7.4mpi. On a 454mag, 502mag, and 496HO, peak HP is seen at 5000rpm. Heck, even on the new 6.2, it's at 5000rpm.

garshev 01-06-2004 06:23 PM

I really have to wonder what all the hype over the 30 is all about. The 29 with the 454mags ran 70 tops and i've been in more than one. the 29 with 500's ran 78 tops and i've been in that one also. The 30 weighs considerably more and the boattest.com says 70.8 gps.
what's not to believe??  Baja typically overprops their boats from the factory and if 4600 rpm is really all the 496mag is rated for then at 4850 (the rpm on the boattest.com report) it would have been against the rev limiter. It had to have the H.O. motors in it> the temp was 85 with 88% humidity which is hardly optimum for speed runs but seems like it ran as i would expect it to for the conditions. You have to realize that gps speeds vs somebody told me speeds are two different animals.

There's a member on this forum who has a 29 with 500EFI's. He's running 82mph.

I know a 29 with 502's runs 74-75, and the same exact boat, littarally, ran 79.5 with 500 efi's. and trust me the 496 ho is a long way from a 500 efi. I would not speak if it were not from1rst hand experince. here is a pick of me in the 29 last fall at the travis run , just ask Bajarunner if it did'nt fly, he tookj the pick of my transom:D

29 OUTLAW 01-06-2004 07:24 PM

I'm able to turn 27's up to 5100/5200 rpm for a GPS best of 79.3. Naturally, that was with only me on board but with about 2/3 tank.

goob 01-07-2004 01:35 AM

I'm still wondering about the weight also. 7700 lbs is heavy, way heavy for a 30' boat.

Hey 29 Outlaw you taken good care of my baby?

Not sure what the deals is with the new 30's but for the money I'll take a well maintained used 29 and use the money I save on gas and females!

Damn right I'm taking care of it. It still looks like it's never been used. It's yours in 2 years if you still want it. Selling price by then will be in the mid 60's and it will still have less than 150hrs.

I'm getting ready to install new disc brakes on the trailer and I may also install new 5 star aluminum wheels as well. Lower gear cases are off right now for fresh paint. I also just got my 27's back from Darin. He did his Accelerator design on them. Wouldn't it be something if I was able to hit 80 this year. All totaled I'm sinking about $3000 into this winter. I'm even installing brand-new white rocker switches on the dash cause those black ones have the print that rubs off!!

Who ever decides to buy my boat vs. a new 30 is going to have a hell of a sweet ride and will be saving enough to buy 2 new Corvettes.

bcoffield 01-07-2004 10:20 AM

Sweet...80mph !

I also have one of Darin's Accelerator design. I know the new prop has done wonders on my boat. You can read more on TBM, user name BC232

As I continue to gain experience with go-fast boats, the thing I'm finding more important, for me, than top end, is the ability to run at 3000 to 4000 rpm in wind blown Sunday afternoon chop. I'm sure the 30 will run like the 29 when setup correctly, I'm just not sure what you get for all that extra money.

BARCOASTAL 01-13-2004 02:31 AM

Dealer at NY show swore the boat would run 80... i quoted all the boat test stuff and they responded that the test was done very early in the production and that baja made numerous changes since, wheels etc.. Merc says that the 496ho peak horse is btwn 4900 & 5000rpm, Boat test ran 70 mph at 4850, so how can you get another 10 mph out of 50 -75rpm more, unless you take away some serious weight...my guess is 73-74 out of the box.

Shooter 01-13-2004 07:44 AM

I agree with asset, I have a 302 with 502s mpi mags and it runs 75mph reliably.

H2Xmark 01-13-2004 05:56 PM

the 30 at the houston boat show had the mag's in it, turning 26 bravo1 props, had hyd. steering to the inside of the drives, swim plat., SST pack. Compass, snap in carpet, toilet upgrade, and a few more little items on it[no shorepower ] had the monster gauges, no trailer boat show price was a little over 118K.
nice boat but I don't think they are going to get a big speed increase over the later 29's, maybe 1 are 2 mph is my opinion

JaayTeee 01-14-2004 05:50 PM

When"s the major magazines
going to test it ?

That should give some somewhat
accurate info.

My guess, 75 to 77 out of the box.

No, HO's.

Hawkeye in IA told me they ran a top speed test and it ran 78 GPS.

Concerning the weight of the new 30ol and the weight of the existing 33 and 36.
30ol = 7700
33ol = 7500
36ol = 8300

How fast is the 30ol with 496ho, 500efi and 525?

How fast is the 33ol with 496ho, 500efi and 525?

How fast is the 36ol with 496ho, 500efi and 525?

The answer is....

JaayTeee 01-19-2004 03:25 PM

I think the weight ( 7,700#'s)
posted in some of the early lit.
was for the prototype boat.

I'm hearing around high 6K's
with production models.

I talked to a salesman at
Big Thunder, who was at the
dealer meeting in Fla., he rode
in a 30 w/525's, said it ran
85 gps.
I would say thats doable, 89,
I doubt.

The 29ol weights in at 6800#

The only caveat is that it was 45 degrees that day in Dubuque, Ia.

I'm still saying 78 is what an HO boat will see - (80 after labbing)

Chris, you know where my cash has gone:D

Guess who will helping out with gas in Clear Lake:p

I can see high 80's with 525's, is the 30' a brand new hull design all together? I like the lines of the 29' and loved the 33' enough to almost buy one. I would be happy with a 30'w/525's...Then I'd add some Whipples:D

BRET 01-20-2004 07:01 AM

I think its entirely possible for a 30 with 525's to run 89. My 33 with 500 efis runs 78 WITHOUT labbed props. I 'll bet I could get 80 with a little of Darrins prop magic:cool:

Highmark 01-20-2004 08:18 AM

Only way to compare is to have the exact same engines. From what I hear the 525 EFI is quite a bit stronger than the 500 EFI's. Some people that I have talked to that have owned boats with 575 SC's and 525 EFI's thought the 525's were almost as strong.

Best way to compare the new 30 Outlaw to the 29 and 33 would be with 496 HO's because that is what they are both equiped with the most. I was talking to Hawkeye boat sales and I thought they said the 30 Outlaw with 496 HO's GPS'ed around 78.

29 OUTLAW 01-20-2004 08:51 AM

All you need to do is look at the props that Baja is shipping with 30's (26's and 28's). That speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned. These are the same props they shipped with 29's.

29 OUTLAW 01-20-2004 09:33 AM

Chris - you are right that all the stuff about speed is just speculation however, if I ever see a boat sitting somewhere and want to know how fast it will run, I just look at the props. Those 26's and 28's tell me 73-75mph and 77-79mph.

Also - I always thought the 525 had only 500hp until I looked on Merc's website. They list the 525 at 525hp. (but they also list the 500HP at 500hp).

If in fact the 525 makes 525hp, this would make it 200hp more than 496HO's in a twin setup. That would be a 10mph difference in my book.

JaayTeee 01-20-2004 12:40 PM

At 82 gps, my Gaffrig speedo
reads 85, it's within 1 mph up to
around 65.

29 Outlaw is right, just look at the
props their running.

My 30" labbed bravo's at 5300 rpm
gets my 81-82 gps, middle of the
summer, normal conditions, day in
day out, yes I've seen faster but
this is the norm.

Just do the math:

30" pitch props at 5300 rpm, top end
speed, no slip 100.7 mph

Now it's been told that Bravo props
are actually over rated, around 1.5"
of pitch, so refigure: 95.35 mph.

So, at 30" pitch 89 mph would = 11%
slip.

And at 28.5" pitch 89mph would= 7%
slip

Vee hull are usually figured around
a 15% slip factor, so this puts it
down to the low to mid 80's.

As far as the other manufacturers,
and their claims,
I hooked into a 2001 35 lightning
with 500 efi's last year, I eeked
by him, he claimed he was doing
88

An identical boat to that ran in the LOTO
shootout: 79 mph.

All in all, claims can be made, but the
truth isn't generally known 'til your
riding in it.

Once again, I say 75-77 ho's
Lowto mid 80's 525's

Exact same here. Up to about 65 I'm within 1mph. At 78-79gps the speedo is bouncing between 80-82.

I thought that fluid in the speedo was supposed to keep it from bouncing. I have noticed that Baja came with 2 different types of Livorsi Monster speedos. One type has 80mph at about the 11:00am position and the other type has 80mph at about the 1:00pm position. I have the 11:00am type. Maybe that's why I bounce.

A few days ago Livorsi confirmed this with me when I was getting ready to send him my speedo back for repair. They said it was not enough for me to just say "2001 29 Outlaw Monster speedo". They needed a picture cause there was more than one type.
