Rigging a Banana with a V8 Johnson
#1
Well I plan on taking my time restoring "Spoiled Banana".
In the mean time, I have removed some needed parts in order to install one very large outboard on Monkey Bizness.
I am hoping to rig it this weekend coming up, but I have some questions I can't answer.
1. How do I lift a 550lb outboard when I don't have a lifting ring?
I can use the crane at work that the airline uses to lift jet engines, but do I just wrap chains inder the powerhead?
2. I had the previous owner block off the oil injection so I can mix the oil. How do I drain my gas tank so I can start with a known quantity for mixing? Snake a hose in and have my brother suck the fuel out?
3. I'm going to run a 24p four blade trophy prop for starters. Any idea how this combo will do?
4. Where do you buy a flushing attachment for a gear case with a nose cone and a low water pick-up?
Thanks for any input...

First put all the parts back on my boat!
Just add enough oil for 60 gal. Then top the tank off and pick the boat up and shake it.(dumb A$$)
I guess I"LL have to come over and do it for you like always

first use the right lifting ring.mine is all ready in NH. (lent it out) then any good cherry picker, gantry crane, tree branch.
second, to drain the fuel use the primer pump that should be used with a V8 outboard. also use 1/2 inch line from the tank to as close to the engine as possible. then your primer pump. then 3/8 to the engine. check your pickup tube in the tank.these are the most critical parts of rigging for a V8 outboard if you want it to live longer than a few hours.

Thanks chucklehead...
Since my race boat is apparently your boat now, can you finish removing the rest of the steering for me?
I have decided to use the controls that came with the motor, which are stock side mount OMC style. I would much rather use the Kieknhaefer controls that I am cleaning up, but summer is coming and I don't have time anymore.
Now that MeatBuzz solved the fuel mystery, (I was hoping to use only fresh fuel since I was told to only run good stuff in this motor), any advice on where to find a steering ram?

Thanks Jeb,
I was calling my brother a chucklehead, your post just slipped in there.
So I definately need a lifting ring huh?
I just located a primer pump, but was told not to use a primer bulb? Your the man though, so whatever you tell me works, I'll do...

Chris,
Land & Sea right up in your neck of the woods has the low water pick-up water flush attachments. I believe it's in Hampstead. I actually bought mine at their facility while driving by one afternoon. Also, Bob's Machine in Fl. has them and possibly Stainless Marine. If you're in a pinch, you can remove the hose end of a standard "Ear Muff" flush and bungee it in place. I've done that too!
Yes, running out of time once again. Get boatin'!

Ok Tough GUY,
Get Dads big chain fall, I have a fluid pump upstairs in my garage, I also have a steering ram that someone left at my house. I was going to put it on E-Bay but i guess you can have it. OH wait a min.

Painting transom tomorrow after some minor cosmetic fiberglassing tonight....weather permitting...
Hopefully installing transom Jack Monday.
Motor to be installed mid week.
Sea Trial next weekend.
Missing pieces in order to be ready for the Cape Cod races include a steering ram and a throttle cable if anyone has either to sell, I am interested.
Ever get the feeling your boat won't be ready in time???
