Thx for the post. These pictures orignally came from our archives that we posted on OSO when we joined. You can see more of these by going to either my photos or Chatim Racing's photos here on OSO.
The picture on the right is actually the first in the series, it shows the start of the 1979 Bushmills Race off Newport Beach California. The start was heading south toward Dana Point.
The boat furthest away from the camera is the start boat, if you look closely you can see the green flag being waved to start the race.
Top Banana 38 foot banana/ coyote / sonic..... is the next boat out.
Next boat out is Betty Cook in a 38 foot Scarab, KAAMA.
Jerry Jacoby is in the Ajac Hawk a 37.5 Cigarette (This was the first ever Top Gun) Bob Saccenti was throttling this boat.
The last boat pictured was Long Shot a 39 foot Cigarette with Bill Elswick. A good friend against whom I competeted in smaller boats for many years.
Long Shot and Top Banana battled for most of the first leg with Long Shot pulling into the lead for a minute or two, but Top Banana lead the rest of the time and won the race.
The other photo was taken just a few minutes later and shows Betty and me flying off a Pacific Ocean roller. In the background is Howard Quam in Flap Jack a 38 Bertram.
The noses of the other two boats that can be seen in the far left are Bob Nordskog in Powerboat Magazine Special and Joel halpern in Beep Beep.
Both photos were taken by Ron Thibedeau...he was the best, and won annual awards from Hasselblad cameras for his work.
