I've been around boats my entire life and still get confused who has "right-of-way". Since you can be in the "right" but because of someone else's screw up you could be DEAD "right" I always follow the previously mentioned action.....a dramatic course change to signal my intentions. Usually the other captain does the same or at least gets the point and adjusts accordingly.....if it's a jetski I just close my eyes so I can honestly claim I never saw a thing!!!

Based on the poll question, and assuming a vesel under power, I take action to keep our paths from crossing. Afterall, they are the stand on vessel.
Horns people can't hear, and if they do, they have no idea what it means. 95% of people on the waters around us have no idea what stand on or give way is, and most go by who's bigger. I stand firm on the rules. However, the "rules" also say regardless of who is stand on or give way, if you collide and you did nothing to try to prevent it, you're just as much in the wrong.
It's like, there are rules but they take a back seat to common sense.
Horns people can't hear, and if they do, they have no idea what it means. 95% of people on the waters around us have no idea what stand on or give way is, and most go by who's bigger. I take corrective action. I will adjust my course to pass behind if possible with plenty of room. I also took the USCG course and think everyone should take it. Especially my father...

Good Thread. I'm glad that many of you know the rules of the road and also know that it pays to be safe and assume that others do not.
As in the example from the above post too many think it is just a big joke and that they are being cool to hijack a thread with a bunch of BS. It scares me knowing people like this are on the water.
I have a family, a business and God Blessed me with a brain and good health. I have too much to loose to act like a fool and take chances.

I mean- This is the US - How many fools knowingly drive on the left side of the road??? I get so frikkin irritated when running a 30 - 40 footer at 50+mph and run across some ahole that thinks the wrong side of the channel is the coolest cause 'that's where all the cool houses are - right?'

Don't want to stir everone up, but wasn't there a video of a USCG boat in this same situation?? I realize that military and official boats always have the right of way. From what I remember that captain did not take any action to avoid the collision except use the loud speaker and horn before sending the other boat to the bottom. Just wondering if that captain still has a boat?
