what is done to that motor?
any pics of the boat etc? i have an 03 26 zt

GOFASTJUNKIE 09-10-2008 08:41 PM

I have not done a thing to it, except change the exhaust manifolds. Nothing special, I think they are "GLM" alum ones. I bought a set off of ebay, for I think $500. The 67-69 is what I have run this year on a lake. Last year, late sept is when it ran 71 on the South River here in MD. We were coming back from the OPA Races in Cambridge. The river and actually the bay were both flat. When I looked down at the gps , as we were half down the river, it showed 71. I was cheating some because there was a very, very, very good driver at the controls. Former race driver. He was with me for the day to try and help my driving skills.............I do not know much about gps. I have been told that they are accurate. It just seems no matter what I do now, I can not get it to that speed. Not that I need to. I am fine going just over 60. In fact, I think the boat acts best at 45 -50. Where I do most of my boating, 45-50 is plenty fast and can sometimes make me the "big dog". I was only able to get out 5 or 6 times this year. Boating is just about done for this year, since my son is in fall sports. My plans have always been to upgrade to a 502. I have toyed with the idea of a 500efi but I really do not need it. This winter I plan to explore looking for a 502. I want something reliable, ploished everything. I will see how it goes. Overall I love the boat for what I do.

ENFORCER24 09-10-2008 08:57 PM

the Choptank river has a nice current towards the bay when the tides going out , added to the bouency of the salt water , i suspect that is the 2mph that you havent found before , still faster then my check , kudo's to you , till i get my blower :evilb:

this post makes me think, somthing is wrong with my boat??

im 375 hp, you must be the 385 right?

so 10 hp, same boat (pretty much) and your 7-9 mph faster then me?
i was out last night bymyself 1/2 tank of fuel and the best i saw was 60.6 i was 60.3-60.5 the hole time. i messed with it 30 ways. i wonder what it is?

i was saying that to a buddy, i said, i think somthing is up with the boat. it seems to run fine, but the speedo used to read like 70-72 now its around 54-65

is 60 mph off for the boat?

GOFASTJUNKIE 09-11-2008 10:47 AM

I know what you are saying. I did see 71 now I can't get it that fast. I do have the 385. I figure after the plugs are changed and I put high test back in it, I should see 71 again. Where I boat now only has regular gas. They do not even offer a "plus" gas. If mine was off as much as yours is, then I would think something is wrong. What rpms can you get to?

Enforcer, what you said in your post, is what has been explained to me before. Somebody told me it was running "downhill"????? or something like that.

i run it right out to 4800-5k on the stock tach.
seems like somthing is wrong if your 10 kore house and that much faster.
whats your boat weigh?

GOFASTJUNKIE 09-11-2008 01:40 PM

I think I weigh around 4500???. The weight has to be close to what your weighs. Did you read the post by Enforcer? It makes sense as to why I have not seen the 71 again. It does sound like somethig is wrong on your end, if you are running it out to 4800-5000. I can't believe the manifolds that I installed could make that much difference. I will need to check what size prop I am running. I have will not be able to find that out until next week. The boat is still in PA at the lake. Maybe the 10 extra horse power makes that much difference.........

noyzee 09-11-2008 02:41 PM

i know im told that the 496 has some restrictor in the manifold thats good for maybe 1 mph, and it comes with the nice elbow style in place of the old 454 flat style, but i dont know.
its strange. id like to get a weight of the boat and see, the boat spends all summer in the water, i wonder if it soaked some water into the hull and is now 5000 pounds or somthing?

GOFASTJUNKIE 09-12-2008 12:46 PM

I saw your post in the genral forum. Yes, i am running a 3 blade. I am fairly sure it is a 23. I am trying to find the one prop I have laying in the garage. It is is the 23 then I have the 25 on the boat. But with the speeds I have been able to get, i am fairly sure it is a 23 3 blade mirage. I don't know if that helps you any. I am actually thinking of putting a 4 blade on for next season but all of this talk is having me doubt that........:drink:

socalstone 09-12-2008 12:54 PM

I know a guy with a 97 or 98 25' Checkmate - Convincor.
Stock carbed HP500 and standard bravo. He said it ran 80 on gps.
This thread has me scratching my head.

Was he bsing me? How much does a 25 Checkmate weigh and how fast does it truly run with an HP500?

sabo 09-12-2008 02:26 PM

He should be right around 70mph, to get 80mph its more like 650hp....

Find out what pitch, drive ratio and rpm he's running and that will tell you..

Absolute BS!! It took me 720 hp to get to 85 mph. Even then, condition and load have to be perfect to get 85, more likely, 83 is achievable.

socalstone 09-12-2008 08:26 PM

LOL. Guess I was a sucker. thanks for the info.
If I'm ever out on his boat again, I'll bring my gps and set the record straight. Great boat though.

72mph in ideal conditions. If another person is in the boat, water is flat, air temp above 85, etc the boat is running in the upper 60s. I agree with Vinny and some others 80mph with a carbed HP 500 is on the optimistic side.
