Tony Scott to take a ride with "Don Aronow" - 17/10/2007 10:12:10

Fox and director Tony Scott are to re–team once more on a proposed biopic Don Aronow, eccentric inventor and multi–millionaire who invented the cigarette boat, the drug–runner‘s high speed boat of choice made popular by 80‘s favourite "Miami Vice".

Aronow, among other things, was a powerboat racing champion for 10 straight years before turning his hand to boat design. Consequently, his cigarette boat (so called for its long / smooth shape) proved so successful it was quickly adopted by Columbian drug lords to ferry their illicit cargos. In an ironic twist, Aronow was awarded a $20 million grant by the U.S. Customs to design and build an even faster boat to catch the smugglers. His notoriety was to prove his undoing when, in 1987; he was executed by the mob.

Scott‘s own production company, Scott Free, will produce the film right after he has finished directing Denzel Washington in "The Taking of Pelham 123".

Supposedly the film has already been shot, edited and shown at Cannes this year. Then I read it was being cut for TV showing. A few months ago someone was posting about having people e-mail some of the producers about a squabble, then they deleted the post.

I guess we'll know when they release it.

My neighbor is the producer. The movie has not been shot yet. They're working on the script (the writers strike is not helping).

It's going to be a killer movie though. In line with Tony's last movie "american gangster" and others like goodfellas, casino, etc.

I got my info from one of the producer's websites. It seems that the only place that the BS is deeper than the boating world is the movie world.

yea, no sh!t!! The good news is my neighbor and I have talked about this project a bunch of times, since he knows we have a Cigarette, and he's explained to me the studio is really excited to do the project. When it's done, it's going to be a great movie about thunderboat row and Don Aronow.

Its odd that they would say it has been completed and screened on their own website if it is not even in production yet.

Where's the link that says the movie's been shot? The quote from Tony Scot above is the same info I was told. He's doing "The Taking of Pelham 123" with Denzel (which is in production). Then he's going to start the Don Aronow story. That quote that's above was as of 2 months ago.

I don't think the movie "Thunder man" is the same movie as Tony's doing. I think the "Thunder man" movie is a B movie.

Trust me, the move Tony's going to do is going to be LARGE budget. Remember how much talk about the Miami Vice movie when it was being filmed. This will be the same way. I'm sure there will be a lot of filming on location in Miami and will require the assistance of many in the industry (I.E. Johnny Tomlinson with Miami Vice). There's no way they'll be able to keep a movie of this size under wraps from people in the industry. My point being, if this movie was already made, you would've known about it.

There are two movies out there.

# 1 Is the movie (documentary ) Thunder Man, that was shot last year in Miami. It was done by Silvio Sardi and a lot of Don's old friends ( me too) were interviewed in it. The movie was then taken to Cannes and run at the film festival...with the hopes of somebody stepping up and buying the rights and doing a full blown movie from the documentary foundation.

# 2 Meanwhile, the Aronow family had been in talks with Fox for quite a while and they signed with them to do a full blown movie...the money is already there...they are not looking for it.

When the Scotts finish whatever else they are doing and the writer's strike is over, they plan on getting started. I understand that a script is already finished.

The theme of the second movie is about a guy who achieves the All American dream...comes from Brooklyn and becomes so successful in life, that he knows kings and Presidents by first name....I also hear that there will be a lot of emphasis on the sport that he so heavily influenced.....this should be a good movie from many points of view.

There is a nice shot of the cover of Thunder Man on the HORBA site.

Click on www.historicraceboats.com

Then look under stories and click on the story about Don Aronow.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought for a second I imagined the whole thing.

It was on Sardi's website that I saw the info on the first movie Charlie is talking about. Then it all disappeared.

I saw Pelham is an '09 release. No doubt we're several years away from the movie.

Exactly! Your version is just a bit more clear

And yes, the script is done but needs a little work and with the writers strike, that's going to be difficult. It looks like the strike may go well into '08 too.
