Went down to see the boat Saturday and put together a deal with Phil this afternoon!

Since this is my first high performance boat I'll probably be on this forum quite a bit looking for advice.

Thanks again!

That's f*ckin' awesome...congrats!!

5 people on board, 3/4 fuel...Not bad!

Hope to see some more pics when you get back down there to run again!

Congrats Greg...it is a beauty.

Brad, everyone is going to have their own reasons why they like somone. Tres is extremely knowledgable and has given me some great advice that I will be trying on my tiger, his knowledge ranks up with the best. Martin offshore and then later Tres himself along with phil have taken a great product and been the gobetween between the owner and the factory and as Brandon said is the eyes of the customer during the build. i would be happy to own a boat that either of these two set up.
another example with boats could be a higher x dim, the factory has a standard for each model, and will make it. Phil and Tres with their knowledge, may go an inch higher with x dim for the customer to give a better top end, as they have tried it. hopes this helps

When it comes to Cigarettes Yes to the first one and by far, very far and further then very far better then Tres's rigiging. LOL that funny that Tres even got compared in this.

Tres rigged my boat from front to back and it has some really cool things done to it, so i wouldnt count him out

omerta one 02-03-2009 12:08 PM

That boat sold in 11 days from the date of the pictures, which was also the first time it was in the water. I'd say that puts the issue of price to rest.

ha! That's funny. You asked for an opinion and he gave it to you. Why not instead of playing games and asking questions that you already have your own opinion on and are going to start arguements and piss people off, you just say that you feel tres's rigging is just as good? Not that it even matters on a thread that's about a boat for sale that has nothing to do with tres.

Not really. It was priced to low. :D

Tank
My opinions are simple I think the boat was priced to high, the 9-10 year old boat brought 67% of the original Lip-Ship prize almost 10 years ago. I hope the new owner enjoys the boat and has many years of safe operation.

When I asked what makes a Lip-Ship better I got answers that ranged from better paint to he's like an AMG model MB. Nothing specific just that I don't understand. Someone finally responded that he is a better rigger than the manufacture. So I asked if he though Philly could rig better than the #1 rigger in the business JT or someone who has been doing cigarettes longer Tres.

Hollowpoint 02-03-2009 02:31 PM

I think Omerta hit it. The boat WAS NOT overpriced. I would think anyone spending $150K, newbie or not, has done his homework, looked at the market, then made a decision wisely, unless he has just won his states' lottery and doesn't care what the cost is.

The fact that it sold before newer twin steps also seems to answer the question of whether a Lip-Ship is worth more. His boats just have that extra little bling that comes from someone who cares about what he does.

thisistank 02-03-2009 02:38 PM

Brad, it all comes down to opinion. But I can tell you this; johnny and phil are very good friends and have worked on projects together in the past. Hell, johnny started his racing career winning with phil in the 41 lip-ship apache! As for tres, phil respects him as his competition and considers tres' dad (ralph) to be one of his oldest and best friends. And yes, tres has been around cigarettes for a long time via his lineiage (his dad).

When you ask what makes a lip-ship boat better than others, people have responded with their answers. It may not be the answer you're looking for but don't take others opinions as gospel if you don't wish too. All you have to do is look at the facts. The only 3 cigs to ever win powerboat magazines prestegise offshore boat of the year were all lip-ship edition cigs. And by the way, johnny is an evaluator for pbm so it's obvious johnny respects phils work.

There is not another person in the custom cigarette arena that is more dedicated to cigarette than phil is. Phil has had to turn away very high profile/long term customers in the past who wanted him to rig cats for them. He is commited to cigarette, that alone means alot to many.

I think the 39' Cigarette with 1075's was from the IL dealer? Can't remember what it won at Powerboat mag but I think it was offshore boat of the year?

blume 02-03-2009 03:13 PM

I was wrong, it won Powerboats "V" bottom boat of the year award!!!!!!!!

Ah, true. I did forget about the yellow 39. However that doesn't take away the fact that every boat phil brought has won showing the workmanship involved.

Tank don't you think that Cigarette deserves just a little of the praise! :angry-smiley-038:

I must say I didn’t mean any harm towards Tres and I respect his work and especially his work towards safe driving.

I love all Cigarettes!

Read my signature line....I give Cigarette much respect. In my opinion they are the best boats built, period! The crew at Lip-Ship improves on greatness and takes it to the next level, probably why they use his boats more often than not at the shows as well.

I know you're talking to Tank, but HELL YES Cigarette deserves tons of the praise! After all, they are the ones who put the idea/design into reality. It's just nice to have a dealer that's been there, done that, on TONS of different setups, to help make it the best it can be the FIRST time.

Tres and the Martins had a niche as well, and it's sad to not see Ralph and Tres involved with that part of the business these days. When they moved on, that left LipShip as essentially the last of the "dealers" that would go as custom as the buyer was willing to go. Instead of just slapping 525's in, choosing paint similar to 3 or 4 others, and making the boat just like everyone elses, they make an effort to illustrate what the factory is capable of creating beyond the "stock" setups that anyone can dream up.
