I just put a Wema sender in my Mistress. I don't think you'd have much luck with the same make/model of sender, you're talking nearly 20 years. Most have the same ohm(resistance range). It was an easy replacement. Disconnect all the batteries, remove the sender, measure to the bottom of the tank, buy a sender thats about 1" shorter, and re-install. Remember you're dealing with a tankful of gas, so use all due precautions.
I measured 16.5" to the bottom, but bought a 14" sender for two reasons. First, it was all the store had at the time, and second, the V is very sharp in the bottom of my tank, so if the sender goes all the way to the bottom, as the tank gets low and the lever starts being in the V, it's measuring a smaller amount of fuel for a given level. Maybe I just am rationalizing my impatience.
Good luck.

Looks like I ordered the 12 inch version. It's not perfect but I think it's much better than a float sender. Only problem I had was getting the old ones out, those little screws seemed like they were welded in there!
